Blog Visitors and Readers, What do you Know About Them

May 22, 2010 - Last Modified: September 15, 2010 by Kharim @ Free Blogging Tips

Blog Readers and Visitors

As a blogger, ask yourself these questions below:

  • 1) Where your traffic is coming from?
  • 2) Do you know where your blog visitors are going?
  • 3) What do they want from your blog?

These are some really important questions to ask yourself and you must know the answer to them if you want your blog to be successful.

In this post I will help you to answers the questions mentioned above.

Where your traffic is coming from?

This is a very simple question to answer if you have Google Analytics tracking code installed on your blog. You do this by simply logging into your Google Analytics account, select view report, and then go to the traffic source overview. View the traffic source overview report. You will see where all your traffic is coming from.

For example: If most of your traffic is coming referring sites this means you were doing some sort of promotion to get this traffic. So if you were commenting on other blogs keep doing so, if you were doing forum posting keep doing so or if you were guest blogging keep doing so.

Do you know where they are going?

You can find this out by using the WP-Stats plugin. I use this to see where my visitors go after leaving my blog.

If your visitors are leaving your blog to other sites then you would no doubt want to patch up this “loop whole” and keep the visitors in your blog. You would also like to drive some of these visitors to your affiliate links and hope to generate some sales.

What do they want from your blog?

This is the easiest question to answer. If you have a site about dog training this means your visitors want dog training tips. If you have a site about recipe this means your visitors want some cooking tips to fix up a great meal.

Develop good writing technique to deliver unique and quality content to your readers to satisfy your readers appetite.

In Conclusion

Now that we have answered these questions, share with us, what are you doing to get traffic to your blog?
What are you doing to keep traffic on your blog?

Google Analytics is one great tool in showing us exactly where our readers are coming from, which posts are clicked on and who's exiting where. It's a great tool in planning ahead to where your site is going to.
    • Kharim says:
Yeah I love the stats reading that it shows :)
  2. Asad says:
I think it is very important to know the psychology of your readers. You should know what they love to read about. What articles of yours are most visited and appreciated. You write for people so you should know about your blog visitors and readers.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for your input Asad :)
  3. ashok says:
Those are three excellent considerations, and love the fact that you gave concrete recommendations (Google Analytics, the stats plug-in). I will say that the third question may be harder to answer than it first appears. People can get information from anywhere on the Internet. Blogs are endlessly repetitive. I think there's a very strong case to be made that personality is the heart of blogging, and you won't really know how your readers relate to you until quite a bit of time passes by.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks ashok for the comment :)
  4. Udegbunam Chukwudi says:
Wp Stats is an excellent plug-in. Without woth I truly wouldn't have noticed the traffic drain one of my old blog posts was creating. I simply went back to the old post and added some modification that stopped them from leaving my blog for good. Google Analytics still remains the best traffic analyzer anyway ;-)
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for your input on my post Udegbunam Chukwudi. :) and yes you are right, Google Analytics is the best analyzer
  5. Kristi Hines says:
It's good to keep an eye on your referral sites... not only to know who your audience is, but it can also be an eye opener to who is stealing your content. I remember once I had a huge boost of "traffic" from one site, and when I went to it I found out it was because they were ripping all of my articles. Thankfully (sort of) they were keeping my internal links intact, so people were being redirected to my site. But watching analytics can help aid in catching content thieves.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for your comment Kristi, keep up the good work hun :)
  6. Tola says:
Nice tips Kharim. I'm definitely all up for Google Analytics. I'll be pretty lost without it! I especially use the referring sites to find out who gives me more traffic and then focus more on those sites. Never thought of tracking exit links before though, so thanks for that.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for the comment Tola. Google Analytics is one of the best things to install on your blog or website.
  7. Costa says:
Right to the point, Kharim. Knowing the kind of traffic you are getting is crucial to making money. If you already have the traffic and you know your traffic then you know what to promote. Or you can do it the other way round. Decide on a product, then go get traffic that are interested in that kind of products. That means you start from scratch and work towards targeting specified traffic from day one. Higher conversion rate if you do it this way.
    • Kharim says:
Thats true, Costa and it's really important to know where your traffic is coming from so you can continue with that source of traffic :)
  8. Vinay says:
Seriously Google Analytics is the best way to track down your visitors and keep up the chart! WP-Stats is also nice feature. But few times it wont the graph properly! Thanks for the nice post Kharim :)
    • Kharim says:
      Thanks for the comment :)
  9. Agent Deepak says:
I fully rely on Google Analytics. WP Stats Plug-in is heavy on Database so I do not use it.
    • Kharim says:
Same here Deepak, but I use both of them. Thanks for your comment :)

Thanks Tushar for your input. I have just checked my Google Analytics stats and my bounce rate is at 9.77 % Keep up the good work man :)
  12. Derek says:
Very good post kharin. I have been tracking my stat's for the past 2 years with analytics but for the past 6 months or so i have been using the WP-Stats plugin and i love this plugin. I have found out the most popular content people seem to view and also find out how the visitor found my blog. With this information, i tweak those pages or posts a little to try to make it more enjoyable for the reader and SEO friendly. I hope that one visitor will also suggest my blog to friends to get the viral marketing kicking into high gear. I know what my visitors want but have to continue to give them what they want but also try to turn a little profit in doing so. The main thing is to track where your visitors are coming from to visit your blog and find out what topics they are most interested in. Quality content is always good. .-= NEW from Derek´s last blog ..The Vital Aspects Of The E-marketing Strategy. =-.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for the comment Derek. My blog is only 3 months old and I have been watching my stats. I also check on my Alexa rank as well, and for a new blog I am already at 270,000 which means I am doing really great.
  13. Brandon Connell says:
As an internet marketer in the business for a very long time (over a decade), I find that I have OCD about statistics research on all of my websites, and I often follow the referral links to good blogs that I end up commenting on. .-= NEW from Brandon Connell´s last blog ..How Ritalin made me a better blogger =-.

  14. Dennis Edell says:
I am admitted;y very bad about checking stats. Other then the small weekly report I get emailed (statcounter.com), I can't remember the last time I checked. I'm amazed though, with all the hoopla surrounding GA, they don't have the ability to see where visitors go? .-= NEW from Dennis Edell @ Direct Sales Marketing´s last blog ..UPDATED: Aweber Affiliate Link Contest! – This Is It!! =-.
    • Kharim says:
Thanks for the comment Dennis. Thats why I use both. The WP-Stats plugin will show you which links your visitors click on your blog to leave.
  15. Colleen says:
Nice article Kharim. One thing I wanted to emphasize, and this is kind of a repeat of what you are saying, but the blog entry needs to answer the question the seeker is asking. Sound simple, but if the article is not answering a question, or solving a problem, the article is not as valuable. We used to think ranking was everything, but we were finding we were getting traffic but losing it quickly. Our bounce rate was high. We started posting content that answers a question or solves a problem, then giving the visitor a clear answer. We like seeing visitors finding us through the search phrases we are targeting in the article, then clicking through on the answers we provide. .-= NEW from Colleen@Kennewick Real Estate´s last blog ..Homes For Sale In The Pasco Washington School District =-.
    • Kharim says:
Hey Colleen, thanks for reading and commenting. Excellent point you made , thanks :)
  16. Huey says:
I always Analyse my traffic stats to see how I can optimize my content and pages to suit my readers needs. It's also great to use the traffic stats to understand what the visitors may be expecting from your site. I run a number of sites and the traffic stats are extremelty useful for determining what to do next, what the next article should be about and what design approaches you should take with the site. I get traffic to my sites usually through social media and search engines. Optimising content and building relevant links. .-= NEW from Huey´s last blog ..Boondocks Season 3 Episode 3 =-.
