How to Add Social Bookmarking Image Buttons and Speed your Blog

April 18, 2010 - Last Modified: February 14, 2013 by Hesham Zebida 16,647

social_media_buttons

This is my final recipe for adding social media and social bookmarking buttons to your blog and make more user friendly, I have visited so many blogs and found that lots of bloggers are missing a real social media “working” codes that reduce the pain and give readers a good reason to summit articles and vote for them after enjoying the good and the excellent read.

So we should give our readers and visitors all the tools and ways they need to share and bookmark our articles, which will give us more exposure and greater promotion.

Remember that your blog visitors (including me) will NOT spend their time trying to find a way to share your articles, NOT everyone is using social toolbars and add-ons on their browsers to share or bookmark pages!

Give me the chance to promote your work

If you know me, you will understand that I don’t have too much time to waste on bookmark sites, but I actually do have ideas to reduce the pain of submitting my articles to those sites, and I always try to find better solutions and make my sites more user friendly, probably this because I run more two social bookmark sites right now, which means I really.. really have limited time than before, if you know what I am suffering from, then you should read my guest post that tell all about How I manage busy social networking life with multiple projects at hand, so if you really want me to share your articles and promote them give me a fast way, don’t make me change my mind and just leave your blog with our crediting your work!

What I hate about Social Bookmarking when visiting Blogs

I like your blog, I enjoyed the read, and I didn’t share your article! Why? this is what I most hate when I visit your blog and I want to share your article:

  • You don’t provide a way to share your posts and articles.
  • Your blog doesn’t have any tweet button (it toke me years to Tweet your article, I really hate that!)
  • Your blog have a tweet button but it’s not set probably, it doesn’t have @your_twitter_id
  • Your social buttons code is not set probably (it doesn’t send Title, description… etc.)

What about Vote buttons?

It’s up to you, but I don’t use them on this blog, and probably I will think… and rethink more than once before adding any vote button to my blogs, the reason is most of vote buttons slow the load of page, because usually it does more than one call to an external server, so I removed all vote buttons, even my own social bookmark sites vote buttons, and instead I am going to use images, it’s much faster and do the same job, it just don’t display how many people voted for an article, but it’s not the most important thing, it’s enough for me to show twitter counter at the mean time as I am more active on Twitter, and I can not deny the fact that I like getting more tweets on the counter, and in add to traffic… It’s a way to show new visitors that you have an active blog, and people like to tweet and share your posts!

So, probably you would like to get some code for your blog…

Speed your blog load with the new Topsy code

First of all, you may notice that I am using Topsy button to tweet and retweet, and I am not using Tweetmeme button because it’s kind of slowing the blog load, specially if you have more than one button on the home page, and I feel more comfort with Topsy.

During my visit today to Topsy site, I discovered that I am using the old Topsy button code, so I was working to collect the pieces of button code to add it instead of the old one, and the results was great because the new Topsy button is loading after the page loads which means the blog pop-up more faster. You can check the Topsy Laps and get the new code, and in case you will get lost, then this code is what I am using, and it has all variables you will need all together:

You can add more CSS to position the button in the exact place you like.

How I make submission to BlogEngage and FaqPal more faster?

Imagine if you are submitting your post to BlogEngage or FaqPal for example, you have to go through 4 or 5 pages to finish the job, so… let’s collect the steps:

  1. 1- First you have to open the site in your browser
  2. 2- Hit submit button
  3. 3- Add the URL or your post and hit to submit
  4. 4- then on the window number 4 open to add details, then hit preview
  5. 5- review and submit

This is so boring, these are 5 boring steps that no body likes, and this is not going to work for me… I really don’t have time for that, and I will not use the vote buttons as I said it’s slowing the blog load, so no body can blame me if I removed my own social bookmark site buttons, so… the solution I found is to add a nice image button that saves my time and take me immediately to the step 4, that means you need only 2 steps to submit your article and make my life better.

What is the best Social Bookmark code

1- It makes it easy to share and bookmark

The best Social Bookmark code is that code with extra features, it can send information about the article you are submitting, at least the Title and Description of the article, so it makes it easy for me, I will feel happy while editing the title and description if it’s already there (note that you should edit the title and description to create unique content for SEO matters) !

2- It’s fast and saving time

I don’t spend the whole day to Retweet your post, a few clicks and I am done, that means I don’t have an excuse not to share your good work unless Twitter is down or over capacity!

3- You have a nice set of buttons

You are have the most used social buttons, which means maybe I will bookmark your article and share it on more than one site!

Social Media & Bookmarks code

I was discussing with James of Evolutionary Designs earlier about vote buttons or image buttons and which way its better, and we end up deciding using images instead of vote buttons, so I had to spend a few hour to collect the best codes that really works fine for article submissions and add them to my blog, so… to save your time and make this post more useful I am going to share the code with you, so here it is:

Share with your friends on Facebook Polariod Delicious Icon Polariod StumbleUpon Icon Polariod Digg Icon Polariod Mixx Icon Share with your linkedin groups Fav on Technorati! Reddit this post Blend it! Bump it! Float it! BlogEngage it! Add it to FaqPal! Energize it! Monetize it!

And here is some CSS style in case you need it:

.share_care {width: 634px; padding-left:0px;}
.share_care a {background-color:none;}
.share_care img {background-color:none; border: none; margin-right:0.8em;}

How I get the icons?

To get the button images or icons you can simply right click on the images I am using and save them, or if you need different styles and sizes, then you can make your own, or find some nice icons by visiting Icon Finder browse or Find Icons sites, these two sites are great source of free icons, they have more than you really need.

it’s all about Time

Time is very important, and we sometimes – if not so many times – suffer while adding social bookmarking buttons trying to figure out what, where and how to add them to our blogs. We should put in mind that visitors don’t have time, so let’s take the chance and give them a better and faster way to promote our articles.

thanks for this very useful post i will apply it to my blog now
  3. Lesli Hathcox says:
Great. Thanks for the codes above I really need it, this is exactly what I need. By the way a very low speed of blog is really annoying so it is really important that it would be faster so that visitors may easily get annoyed.
  4. Isabella says:
Would having all those buttons slow your site down? Google now penalises you for site-speed, and I find some buttons (the Facebook one especially) to really slow the site loading.
  5. Rose says:
I'm still unsure that you really need all these buttons. My motto is keep it simple - so I usually just ahve a facebook share button on my sites. The other social sites don't have a large enough membership to justify slowing down your site with a whole load of images
  6. Mark says:
Awesome list, Hesham. Just to add to your argument, I know that many people look at web pages while at work and therefore they are doing so behind proxy servers on corporate networks. As you would expect, this slows access considerable. Everything that a webmaster can do to simplify their code and make it load faster is a BIG plus in terms of traffic and conversions. Thanks for the list. i am going to try it out. Mark

I didn't even know you could use Topsy for re-tweeting. Am definitely going to give it a try!

Everything is very clear but where to put the codes for better sharing? Top or below the post.. And I found numbering repeated twice under this line "How I make submission to BlogEngage and FaqPal more faster? " Thank You for this great post..
    • Hesham says:
Sorry for late reply! Adding social buttons on the top or bottom is a matter to testing, you should test and try to find out what's work better! You can use a service like CrazyEgg to see where people click on your blog or website! The simple way to make submission to BlogEngage and FaqPal more faster is to actually keep yourself logged in to your own account when clicking on the buttons!
  14. John says:
I just started using this code about 6 months ago. It has worked great and increased my productivity. I love my bookmarks!
    • Hesham says:
      That's great!
  15. Suresh Khanal says:
It was a great piece of code and works fine for most of the buttons. I am getting 'Access Denied', 'Forbidden' type of error pages for some buttons like FAQPal, Energize. It resulted same in your site as well as mine. Do we need to further tweak the code or it is temporary problem?
    • Hesham says:
You just need to make sure you are logged in to your account on these sites!
  16. Robert says:
"There were a problem while copying the code, I have fixed that, plz try again to grab the code!" That's brilliant that solved it thanks!
    • Hesham says:
Glad to hear that, and sorry for the other confusing code :)
  17. Robert says:
Great post, thanks a bunch, but for the html code that you supplied for social media and bookmarking icons, it doesn't automatically grab titles and url's. Instead when users click on them they have to manually enter url's. I've had buttons before where the user just simply clicked on them and it would automatically pick up the url and fill in the title info for them. Your HTML code doesn't do this, any ideas how? I'd love to use this for my blog which im redesigning at the moment Thanks again
    • Hesham says:
I am using theses buttons on the blog, and it's working for me! Why don't try the buttons on my blog here and see by your self! By the way, this will only work for WP platform!
      • Robert says:
So they are, hmm, I'm using the wordpress platform as well, Could it be because I'm using this code in a widget in the sidebar instead of built into the page?
        • Hesham says:
Yes, PHP code will not work in the text widget! you should add it to the single.php file of your theme
          • Robert says:
Ah well that explains it, Thanks
            • Robert says:
I'm afraid it still doesn't work, I've used in on this site http://www.nextiphonenews.com and at the bottom of posts you will see it, however when you click them it fails to get the url for submission for pretty much all the links
            • Hesham says:
There were a problem while copying the code, I have fixed that, plz try again to grab the code!
  18. Aaron says:
Hi Hesham, It looks like this blog is using Backtype now? Did you have issues with Topsy, or is Backtype just faster?
    • Hesham says:
I have issues with all tweet buttons! BackType is kind of stable and doesn't hurt code validation like Topsy!
  19. Jakes says:
I am using tweetmeme button in my blog. Its because I needed a pack of social bookmark buttons through Digg Digg plugin. By turning on the lazy load option, you can be sure that the loading of other elements in blog are not affected. But, still I need to agree that the lazy loading can be a little ugly when compared to topsy buttons.

Hesham, these are great tips in multiple aspects. I totally agree that in order for readers to promote a post with social bookmarking it has to be as fast and easy as possible. I also used the tweetmeme button that slowed down my blog so eventually I wound up adding the social buttons manually without plugins. After a day I realized that my digg and stumble where not configured to send the title and url correctly so I fixed them. 28. Nile Flores says:
I had Digg Digg up for some time and the developer decided to mess with the html code. It was quite annoying. However, the developer allows manual code insertion. They do have Blog Engage... are you going to get MMO up with that... and also develop a compact icon? I like those for the top of my own blog. I probably will do a manual insertion soon for towards the bottom of my articles, but I do have Sociable. I might use larger icons though because the default Sociable icons are a lot smaller. Good tutorial! :) I need to get you to guest blog for me once at Blondish.net or even WPAddict :) .-= NEW from Nile Flores´s last blog ..Blogger Versus WordPress =-.
    • Hesham says:
I was using Digg Digg also before I added code by hand, and yeah I heard that BE joined the plugin, I have managed an individual plugin for MMO depending on Digg Digg which can be download from the vote button page, I am not sure if I will ask to join the Digg Digg community right now, I think I will save this for my other design project, probably it's the best fit to be added! Probably you know that MMO network is running on Drupal and the nice Drigg module, so basically it's not that easy for me to code another button, I also see this on only one site on the whole internet, and no body of the masters have time to provide it for the community, so... Talking about a compact button, or another button is on my plans but still don't know how to do it and/or find enough time for that! Anyways, I have told you what I really think about voting buttons, I prefer image buttons! and now I am completely against using more plugins if you know how to do it manually, it's better to avoid plugins errors! I would love to guest post on your blogs, so.. probably I will surprise you one day ;)

  32. Ryan says:
Hi Hesham, Great tips buddy. I've provided a tweet button for a while. After reading this article I'm motivated to add another social networking button to my posts. In the beginning I wasn't as active on social networking sites but now see the importance as my presence has expanded. The only thing that I would caution against is adding too many buttons. Make sure that your blog doesn't look cluttered. Other than that, go for it! As you mentioned time is a valuable commodity and the less time someone has to spend looking for a forwarding button the better. .-= NEW from Ryan´s last blog ..Changes At THE Cash Gifting Program Blog =-.
    • Hesham says:
I agree with you that too adding many button is not that good, specially if no body is using them, and here .. I am going actually to collect more information about which buttons are mostly used on my blog, and probably remove the rest! Thank you for your time
  33. Fazreen says:
Nice info! I'm only using one button which is tweetmeme and the rest just a simple sentence with link to submit page.
    • Hesham says:
That's very good, it will work by any how if you are just providing a simply way!
  34. Baba says:
Well said. Someone will rarely tweet or vote to social media sites if the buttons are not placed or placed in bad location. Will test the code and let you know if it really loads fast :)

I do agree Topsy is quite faster. It loads independently and tweeting is almost one click with it. I use it on my blog. By the way you have discussed a very common yet unsolved issue here. Thanks for this, I will have to look into my social bookmarking buttons and optimize them
    • Hesham says:
I think you need to tweak Topsy code a little to include "@AgentDeepak" in the retweet! ;) Ops! sorry.. no. it's your button, yours are working good!
  37. Genite says:
I like this article but i have a question, can i use this share button code on any kind (any programing language) of sites?
    • Hesham says:
Not directly, but after some modifications you can use it on any platform, you need to change the URL & Title PHP codes to fit your platform! and and has to be changed! and this means the code is supporting WordPress only and it works only on WordPress platform!
      • Genite says:
Thank you Hesham for this information.

    • Hesham says:
Very true, but for sure not all your blog visitors will ignore the buttons! I also think it depends on the how much you are active on social networks, so probably (personally) I will choose to add the buttons because I am active on those networks which increase the chance that my fellows will use them!! So basically asking is not a bad idea :) ... also writing about it is one cool way to get attention of your blog visitors to use those buttons as it's not for decoration! But if you want the final tip then I must say writing content that drive your visitors to use those buttons even with out asking! although it's not only about writing good content, but it's about knowing your readers and blog visitors and give them what they like and what they expect! I was amazed I got these retweets on the weekend after publishing this post! Twitter buttons is the most used! (can't live with out at least one :) Thank you for the nice question Josh, you pointed me to pay attention to measure how visitors will deal with these buttons, so.. I will be checking that.. this is great!

What a thoroughly explained article ! I totally agree w/ you Hisham , I often encounter many blogs where the Retweet Button is not set properly , which means : I have to take the time , look up the persons name on twitter & add the correct @Name to it before submitting the article - it is a very time consuming task and at some point I just get so frustrtated w this process that I simply leave the blog ! believe it or not - I have seen many famous blogs who dont have their retweet button set properly - as shocking as it may be its true. You have done many users a great service by putting this together for them . Great article , now I know where I will be referring future users ! Thank you for the accolades Hesham :D , however : customizing your Admin Login Panel will be one of the easiest tasks you will ever perform - trust me ( just go back to the tut I had written and you will see it is as easy as a walk in the park ;) ) * I promise :D Now as far as you delving into a Thesis Theme ..... hmmm..I am not too keen on Theseis ( and neither are any real Design Masters which I know out there ) ; and I will give you this little tid bit of advice , go read this very detailed article by Amber Weinberg & Bill Chapman ( 2 very well experienced web designers & back end developers ) and if you still wish to continue on your Quest for Thesis , then - YOU are a braver man than most out there ! *( Read the comments when you get there as well - those are some pretty well experienced developers & designers talking about Thesis right there ) . Let me know what your thoughts are after reading the article ;) Regards & Ill be awaiting your response on the matter :D M.

lol! OK.. I started to read... but this is only a fast reply since the post you send me started with exactly what I think about Thesis, and exactly what I was doing for the last 2 days I am trying to style the navigation menu lol! I finally could figure 90% of it but ... man, I spend the nights with too much coffee to keep myself awake while working ;) I will be back to you again after reading the full article and comments!
        • Hesham says:
WOW! I had to put my respond to that post there! The good thing is I am NOT and I don't think I will work for any Thesis clients, or even anyone who asks for designing or tweaking any kind of WordPress themes! I will do what I like to do with out any pressure from any kind, and this is the real beauty of the idea of my project! I will let you know about it when I have something in hands! Many thanks to you Mai for referring me to this awesome post!

I am soooooo relieved you made the right and sensible choice Hesham , believe me if John ( from DesignBump ) who is an experienced developer /programmer/designer stated that he would rather build a theme from scratch ( Sandbox) then trust me when I say : If John, Bill & Amber - say Dont Do It , one would have to be an egotistic fool to attempt such an endeavor . I had taken on the Thesis theme at the request of a friend - I took one look under the hood and I high tailed it out of there ( needless to say that I felt bad & went back and spent 2 weeks building up the theme from scratch ! Literally ! ) - however : I know better now and will not repeat the same mistake again ( even though I did learn all the ins & outs -I dont want to even see a Thesis theme from this point on ! whooohooooo ! :D ) . *And yes, designing for others does take up ALL of your time - I should know 0- Im torn between 2 platforms ( Blogger & Wordpress ) and I have users continually pleading their Design Cases daily ! I had begun designing my own WP site ......4 months ago - Im still not done : WHY ?? because Im constantly so busy w/ other users issues that I dont even have time to post to my own blog any more ! But - how can I say 'No' to someone who requires my help ? :) Do your thing Hesham and be happy doing it ! ;) .-= NEW from Mia´s last blog ..Links for 2010-04-18 [del.icio.us] =-.

Thanks for the information. I like the code, short, sweet, simple, and quicker load time than a plugin. Thanks doing the leg work for me. Guess I'll have a few happy clients in a couple days time. .-= NEW from CJ´s last blog ..Writing Styles Set the Writing Tone =-.
