Stop Being A Zombie Blogger And Get On With Your Life!

September 29, 2011 - Last Modified: September 29, 2011 by Robert Boland

Zombie Blogger

So you’re sitting there, groggy eyed, head pounding with a triple espresso in your shaking hand as your eyes stare with an empty gaze at your laptop’s screen. You’re constantly refreshing your adsense page, checking to see how your earnings are doing. Suddenly your eyes flicker and something in the corner of your brain registers what you’ve just seen on the screen.

“Today so far: $0.01”

Well at least it’s an improvement on yesterday…

Now come on guys pull yourselves together. That’s not how you blog! So many people find themselves in this situation. They sit at their computer all day, scouring the web and reading up about how to make money online, how to blog, how to get visitors to their site. They click through link after link, page after page, blog after blog, watch video after video and even read interviews of brilliant bloggers on my new site, all the while simultaneously refreshing their adsense page in another window. I call them “Zombie Bloggers”

Your Typical Zombie Blogger

They do the same thing day in and day out. Sometimes to take a break to go and rant on some blogging forum to try and figure out why they aren’t making any money. They claim they’ve done everything. They’ll tell you that they’re writing 3 posts a day, commenting on every blog they come across, they’re constantly tweeting and pushing their sites on social networks and ensuring that all their pages are fully SEO optimised, but still they haven’t got a single cheque from Google.

These Zombie Bloggers live off caffeine and sugary snacks, their desks are littered with crushed styrofoam coffee cups and they live in a world of denial. They’ve bought every e-book on the web, signed up to every course they could find and bought the best wordpress themes out there, but what have they done to actually get their blog going?

Nothing.

Wake Up And Move!

If you are one of these Zombie Bloggers (you’ll probably never admit it) I am about to give you a right kicking. Clear your coffee stained desk of all those Styrofoam cups, throw away all those energy bar wrappers and open up your blinds. Don’t be afraid of the light streaming in your window, it won’t hurt you.

Now next step is to go outside, go for a walk, a run, a jog or swim, anything to get those limbs moving again. Get some oxygen into your head so you can think straight and go drink mountains of water to flush out all that coffee. Then sit down and compose yourself, close your eyes for a minute and clear your head, time to get back to reality.

Welcome Back To Reality

Now that you’re back to life again let’s have a look at the situation. You’ve got a blog, you know what to do to get it going, you know it will take time so why aren’t you doing anything?

Grab yourself a pen and paper, and write down what needs to be done. Prioritize that list and put down how long you’re going to spend at each activity.

What next? Go get a coffee? Check your adsense earnings? NO!

Start working now! Today is when you’re going to finally sort yourself out, if you want to get anything out of blogging apart from a headache, now is when you need to start working once and for all. Even if you just write one post, make sure you’ve optimised it for SEO and then do a bit of promotion, that’s a start. Take small steps, if you go and overload yourself again you’ll just become a Zombie Blogger once more, and trust me, that’s not what you want.

Do yourself a favour and don’t look at your adsense page for at least 2 weeks. No cheating, no sly peaks, nothing. In fact don’t look at your sites traffic either for 2 weeks. Instead just focus on working and developing your blog, add fresh content, optimise it, do some networking. I can pretty much guarantee that you will see both an increase in traffic and earnings after those 2 weeks.

Nice To See You Again

Now that you’ve successfully escaped from the dark realm of the Zombie Blogger it’s time to start making some money. Keep yourself motivated, read this post again and again, don’t let yourself slip back into the world of a Zombie Blogger.

I can promise you, you will be a much happier blogger, a wealthier blogger and a happier person now that you’ve successfully managed to bring your life back from the dark side.

Were you a Zombie Blogger? Or maybe you still are?

Hopefully I’ve saved you and got your blog back on track, let me know in the comments below.

Is it okay to be a Zombie Blogger if your blog is about zombies?
    • Robert Boland says:
I think we can make an exception there then :p
  2. Hamish says:
Nice post. A bit of down time definitely helps to give you a new perspective on things and will definitely help you to write more interesting posts which non-zombies will find it easier to relate to. One question - how did you get a photo of my teenage son (on Saturday morning) to use as your featured image? Glad it was one of his better days.
  3. Louis says:
IMO we need to check the traffic, but not intimidated by the numbers. Looking at which is the #1 landing page helps to determine what article we should focus on. The keywords also tell us what to write :) Good article, Robert!
  4. Bruker says:
calling them Zombie is really funny. Lol.... Nice and impressive post robert, your views are amazingly true and remember able.
  5. Kavya Hari says:

I must ask, how have you gained this window into the personal lives of these "zombie bloggers"? You have such intimate detailed knowledge of their daily machinations! >>>If you are one of these Zombie Bloggers (you’ll probably never admit it) I the first step is denial, it ain't only a river ;)
  7. Jane says:
Well done Rob! I can feel how you've exactly touched a majority of blogger's routine. Not just newbie bloggers but many established bloggers read, watch and admire other A-list bloggers, they have nice plans too. But they don't get their butt off to do something real. Thanks for the heads up.
  8. Pritam says:
A very nicely done article on zombie blogger. Many of the people go through the same situation and refresh their Adsense page all the time to check if they are making any progress. A blogger should focus on the quality of the contents rather than SEO and link building initially. They need to understand they are blogging for the blog visitors rather search engine. Once he is able to develop the quality in his writing, he could go a little bit for SEO and other promotions.
    • Robert Boland says:
Glad you liked it. Yes your right, people just need to learn to focus and remember that other people are going to be reading their blogs
  9. Dave Lucas says:
Haha! Great article! Best thing to do is just "blog naturally" --- if your material is GREAT then the right people will find it, and you'll be golden. If not, it's only a blog!
    • Robert Boland says:
Glad you like it Dave - you've hit the nail on the head there, the best thing to do is "blog naturally" I find I write my best pieces like this one when I just write what comes to my mind straightaway
  10. Saket Jajodia says:
I don't remember when I last opened my AdSense a/c.. :p but ya I do rest of the stuffs wt u told (nt pushing on Social Network) abt Zombie, u cn call me half Zombie Blogger.. :p And really nice article.. Thanks..!! :)
    • Robert Boland says:
At least you've admitted that you're not doing all the right things, this means you know where you can improve
      • Saket Jajodia says:
Ya I don't those things so whats the prob in admitting the truth.. And Yup I will do give my best to do so.. Thanks again for this article.. :)
  11. Mark says:
Were?!? What are you talking about, man, I still am a Zombie blogger. Interestingly, however, I have recently learned that there is a very fine line to be walked in terms of blogging if you are to be successful... ...a fine line between spacing "authority" posts and building links to them as an "irreplaceable" form of promotion. I have finally evolved to "blogging 2.0" and I will be posting about it very soon. Great read, Robert...;) Mark
    • Robert Boland says:
Thanks Mark, I'm glad you found it helpful
  12. Ana says:
So right! I practically had to force myself to get some exercise. I bought a monthly ticket to the swimming pool and I have a reminder set on my phone, so I go swimming every day for at least an hour. Water helps me relax and I enjoy it. My posts have become better. I have new ideas. Working doesn't seem so hard anymore!
    • Robert Boland says:
Great stuff Ana, that's the spirit, as you've seen, even by just exercising you've found blogging easier
  13. Steve says:
Robert, Funny stuff here, because it is so try. People are in such a rush to see results and it is actually counterproductive. Good results come from time, effort and not trying to wring every last dime from your visitors. Consciously or subconsciously your visitors will know when all you care about is money. This makes them more likely NOT to click further, or investigate that product you offer. Monetization is important. I am not saying people shouldn't do it. But the first step is creating that killer content. Then deal with making money. Stop being the money zombie and over time your bottom line will rise.
    • Robert Boland says:
Exactly Steve, that's just what I was trying to get across to people. It's not all about the money
  14. Gagan Arora says:
you give a right keyword zombie blogger nice article thanks for sharing...

Entertaining Blogentry and it describes my life... @ Morgan: but he isnt into plants :)?
  16. Jamie Northrup says:
I still am a zombie blogger, well at least in part, but I've just given myself a goal to not look at my traffic or adsense earnings (or any other earnings) for the whole month of October, I don't know if I can make it, but I will try.
    • Robert Boland says:
Good on you for admitting it Jamie. Stick to this first goal of yours and then I guarantee you'll be able to do more after you've achieved your first one.
  17. Charleen Larson says:
I don't think checking your stats is necessarily a bad thing IF you take action on what you see. If I'm not getting the visits I'd like from a certain source, I triple my efforts there, at least for the day. Writing a new post for each of my blogs takes only about an hour, so clearly I've got lots of time to work on traffic generation (and my other businesses). As a blogger, I have the best job in the world: discovering new talent.
    • Robert Boland says:
That's true Charleen, but a lot of the time people just become obsessed with looking at their stats, and never actually do anything to improve them
  18. Stephanie says:
Ah, so you're saying zombie bloggers need to start using their braiiins. Ignoring stats much of the time is one of the most important lessons a new blogger can learn. It takes time before you get anything really good out of your stats. Focusing on writing quality posts is much more helpful.
    • Robert Boland says:
Hi Stephanie, I guess you could say that - all bloggers really need to do is use their brains, and not let them turn to mush by refreshing their adsense page and facebook feed
  19. Morgan says:
Hi Robert! It's funny, I have a client who's business is related to zombies so when I saw this title, I had to jump on it. :) Anyway, you hit the nail on the head! I think one of the important things to remember is, don't focus on only one aspect of your blog. Like how you said that focusing on monetizing first is a big no-no. Well, focusing on your analytics is a big no-no, too. You have to focus on writing awesome content, engaging and looking like you actually ENJOY it instead of just doing it for the money. :) Great stuff!
    • Robert Boland says:
Hi Morgan, haha that sounds like an interesting business anyway. And yes you're right, the most important thing for any new blogger is to just focus on small steps
