4 Solid Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Write About Making Money Online?

June 24, 2011 - Last Modified: June 24, 2011 by Lee Ka Hoong

Making Money Online

What is the reason or purpose of creating a blog? Do you blog for interest or blog for money? You write and share articles that interest you or provide solutions to others’ questions and problems. You shouldn’t write articles for money. You need to write articles that help people, that’s it.

Some people write a blog for money. They mainly concentrate on making money online without providing valuable articles to readers. They sometimes even write about how to make money online; it doesn’t make you money even when you write about how to make money online. Bear in mind that by writing valuable content that helps people, you would attract more readers to your blog. Don’t bother about making money, because the money will follow when your blog becomes well known.

Why You Shouldn’t Write About Making Money Online?

1. There are too many similar blogs on the web

Simply type the keyword “make money online” in Google. You can see there are tons of similar blogs and websites that write about making money online. If you want to be part of them, there’s nothing new unless you have something really different from them. You can only be successful if you have some secret tips and tricks to teach people about how to make money online with your exclusive method. Otherwise, you’ll just be another ‘make money online’ blog.

2. It’s difficult to stand out from the crowd

When there’s too many similar blogs on the web, it’s very difficult to stand out from the crowd and build up your brand unless you have some secret tips and tricks to teach people about how to make money online; otherwise, don’t touch this niche at all. Even though you have some secret tips for your reader, you need to prove to your readers that your tips are really working by showing them screenshots of how much you’ve earned by using this method. Only then you can get people to trust you and follow your path.

3. It’s difficult to rank well on search engine

This relates to reason #1 and #2. There are a large number of similar blogs on the web. Let’s do an experiment for a week. Say today you search the keyword “make money online” and print screen the page. After 7 days you do the same routine and check the results. See whether all 10 websites or blogs on the main page still remain on the main page. Most likely they are different because some other websites and blogs have outranked those on the first page 7 days ago. That being said, the competition is pretty intense and you’re hardly likely to rank well or maintain your ranking on a search engine. The war will never end.

4. You wouldn’t maintain your blog for long

If you’re trying to make money online by writing about how to make money online, you’re out. No one will trust you if you don’t make money in any other way but writing about how to make money online. You would most likely not write for your blog anymore and quit when you find that it’s difficult to outrank others and don’t make even a cent after several months.

Wrap Up

Remember, writing about making money online is only for those big guns who really make some good money from online, for example John Chow. If you want to make some money online, don’t write about how to make money online. Instead, do some research for the topic you’re passionate about and go for it. You can easily make more money that way rather than writing about how to make money online.

What do you think about another blog or website that starts writing about how to make money online? Do you think it’s working?

"If you’re trying to make money online by writing about how to make money online, you’re out." Still, this is exactly what Lee does with this article! Try count how many times "make money online" appears in the article. Are you a "big gun" Lee, or shouldn't you leave the "make money online" stuff to John Chow? Sorry for being harsh, but in my eyes you do the exact opposite of what you advise...
  2. James Pruitt says:
Although I agree that you shouldn't start off only targeting the IM niche, it is wrong to say only the big money makers should blog in the niche. Often, I find that blogs by less well known people are more real. I started my IM blog when I was a total newbie 3 years ago. Although I am still not a big wig marketer, It is one of my favorite sites to write. It isn't my most profitable site, but it is one of my favorites, and it does make me a decent income. Personally, I think if you enjoy what you are doing, then do it. The money shouldn't be the focus of why you are doing it though. If I never made a dime from it, I would probably still do it. But, the money it makes me is nice, and I am not giving it up anytime soon just because Im not an "expert" at marketing.
  3. abhi says:
Haha! I have always come across blogs saying " how to make money", this was the first one recommeding not to write about making money! A lot of writers blog about making money and come up with the same ideas presented in different ways. Thank you for sharing your opinions.
  4. jezza101 says:
Why do people who are so great at making money online need to sell their "secrets"? I think we know the answer!
  5. Jimmy says:
I´m not quite sure it´s a 100% correct, but it´s pretty damn close.! You can write about making money, but you need to do it in a different angle in order to make it work. Although I can´t say how to do it, I still believe i can be done.
  6. Azam says:
Well I guess difficult to stand out is a challenge worth taking ... I would never advise anyone to avoid do something that makes it difficult to stand out. I would rather say do it but make sure you do it well.
  7. Ikenna says:
New bloggers often make the mistake. I also have a blog about blogging which is more like a diary to put down my progress in my non-make money blog, which is actually making me money. I haven't yet thought about how to make money from the blogging related blog. I mean, if all you do is make money by teaching to make money, what do you expect your readers to do, start their own make money blogs? Thanks for the interesting post.
  8. Amanda Gordon says:
Apart from all the factors you mentioned about the make money online niche (which are absolutely on the money), there is one more factor to consider. The MMO blogs attract a crowd that is reasonably tech savvy. They also tend to difficult to sell to as they have been sold gazillion crap products already. They have bitter experiences and tend to cautious (and deservedly so). Adsense does not work for them as they tend to ignore it (when was the last time you clicked on an adsense ad in another blog?). I have some blogs in non MMO area and sometimes see a single visitor click 3-4 ads in single session.
  9. Jean Paul says:
Now, you have some good points, but your basic premise is not very strong. Here is why: 1. You should blog to make money. You pay for hosting. You spend time. You do your research. You should get paid for that. Plus, when people pay for advice, and information, they are more likely to implement it. 2. Money will not follow. Profits have to be engineered. You can't just put up a blog and expect to bring you money. "Do what you love and money will follow" is one big lie that people believe. It will only leave you broke. 3. It's not easy to sell make money online products. But if you have good stuff, by all means, do your best to sell it. Then again, you have some of MMO content on your site...

    >>If you’re trying to make money online by writing about how to make money online, you’re out Haha, this is a strange logic loop, like the chicken and the egg riddle. I completely agree with the sentiment of this article. There are WAY too many blogs around that are only about "Making Money Online" and they are usually not very useful and are just copies of copies of copies of something posted last year. When I browse the blogs, I'm looking for interesting tech-related stories.
  11. maria says:
Hi Lee, you're actually right. The point is to find a niche with less competitors if you actually would want to rank high for that particular niche. Just talk about what you do best. Making money online, everyone has done it.
  12. KBharath says:
When ever i write about make money online that what i think how much to write about this topic. and i have seen that most of them only give Tips and Tricks to make money and they will not Share their secrets how they are making money.
  13. Kimi says:
Hi Lee, This is always good topic on the internet :-) I personally would not blog about making money online topics unless I myself really have experienced it. It is definitely hard to stand out from the crowds, but if I really know how to do it, I would blog about it.
  14. EZ says:
Hi, Lee! well I'm thinking same for days, i see most of the bloggers only blogging for making money online or about making money online. there are alot other things we can blog about, even life is full of blogging material. but still many people target making money online which is i guess useless because pros have much knowledge to get ranked for those keywords. Regards
  15. Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Agree with 4 of your solid points, but I had to disagree your last paragraph sentence that said "writing about making money online is only for those big guns who really make some good money from online, for example John Chow." First off, this sentence is discouraging because, though we shouldn't but sometime and I mean sometime we could write one or two stuff about making money online, for example reviews of product making money online, because when the time comes where your blog is famous... trust me your reviews will pay off. So, though what you said is right but still this is controversy, everyone wants to make money online, but is better to start off without the mind of making money.
  16. Andy C. says:
You provide interesting insights on writing about making money online. It is a good thing that I only write posts, which is similar to my interest. I couldn't think of writing posts related to making money online because I didn't know many ways, which are legitimate and effective. Thanks for the interesting post.
  17. Ming Jong Tey says:
Sometimes I always wonder how many of the "make money online" blog or products actually rely on the method they teach to earn a living online. Can they actually make money without selling the money making niche products? I understand there are tons of people earn a living by getting into the money making niche and selling their product about it. However, I think first of all, we need to at least demonstrate that we walk the talk before selling the product. In another point, I truly believe that we should stay within the money making niche apart from other niches just to stay in touch the latest technology, trend, etc...We can contribute to the "money making niche society" by sharing what we know or selling the products that we personally adopted. Cheers, MingJong
  18. Samantha says:
Yes articles should be about helping people. I agree. We should get in the mind set of being problem solver's. Helping people full fill their needs is the # 1 priority. Do this and you will become a successful online marketer.
  19. Mark says:
I write about making money online occasionally on one of my blogs. But I have to agree. MMO is so played out that nobody trusts it anymore. There are many other niches that have lower hanging fruit in comparison.
  20. DiTesco says:
I have to admit that I am somewhat confused and maybe I am missing the point. Isn't teaching people how (or showing the path) to make legitimate money online valuable? Making money online is business, and business, no matter how you call it, is making money, online or offline. Sorry about this, but I write about those things you mention not to (making money online and related), so just want to make sure we are on the same "radar" :) Or are you referring about "not" using that keyphrase instead or avoid that niche all together if you are just blogging for fun?
  21. Faissal Alhaithami says:
wow! I was looking to read an article like this!!! too many bloggers are writing about making money online, and the problem that they even haven't earn any penny yet lol^^ well done Lee! and I must say the you got awesome blog, keep it up!
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ Faissal, Thanks a lot Faissal! Hope you like this article. :)
  22. Jitendra Singh says:
We know that there are many similar blogs on the net but if you will continue give competition to them then very soon you achieve what you want. Between thanks for the tips.
  23. Jeffrey Kang says:
I think you all have it wrong. You don't need to rank well for the "make money" search, rather try adwords? That's works quite easily, but it can be expensive so it's a good idea to use the whole sales funnel. But as far as the topic for the blog goes, it shouldn't be about the "make money online" niche. It should be more about what you've learned from your other affiliate experiences. I post anything I want though, like the crap I do when I'm bored. You should check it out.
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ Jeffrey, You might be right, but what I think for a niche blog, when you start a blog that talks about make money online, then you should write anything about this niche, of course affiliate marketing is covered in make money online niche. But if you write something out of the niche, says you write about your rambling, then it would be not that good.
  24. Nipon says:
Money making is a very competitive niche, you will seriously need to work very hard to get to the top
  25. Dave Lucas says:
The phony self-proclaimed blogging gurus who are selling their $27 ebooks and pdf's are making tons of money, and none of your rules apply to them. (But they make others believe it's easy to follow in their footsteps, so I really welcome the honest post you present here!) The gurus have overhwhelmed the "sheeple" among bloggers. They're great writers who write and win a lot of guest-posting contests --- they use those posts as links to sell their products. It's like a big network marketing scam! Just "google" the name of one of these gurus and you'll see how deep their influence has gone. These mini-Hitlers want one thing: control (of your money!) Find something in your "niche" or area of personal interest or expertise, and blog about THAT instead! (And throw $27 away on that "guide to blogging riches")
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ Dave, lol! You're definitely true Dave. They have good writing skill or hire someone to write a very perfect sales letter for them, that makes people trust what they present and sell. So I should say the sales letter is better than the ebook? lol!
  26. joseph says:
hey Mr. lee, well said this the biggest mistake that every newbie does, they think if they want to make some cash online they have to put up an online money making blog, holy shit. Just write about which you have knowledge, maybe your field or whatever, try to look out of the well there is whole wide universe and it is not that there are only old undiscovered niche's, new hot niches just pop out, you have to discover them which are related to your knowledge and interest.
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ joseph, Yes, this is what most of the newbie face these days. People who write about make money online should be some techniques and strategies that make them money, and they should have made quite some money before they share about make money online. It doesn't make sense if someone doesn't make money but write about make money online.
  27. Gugnu says:
This is true that you should give some other links from where we can make money online. not just write simple articles. Thanks
  28. David says:
Yep all fair points but also it's how you are focusing they make money online if you are pitching work from home crap you will likely have secondary issues on platforms like Facebook that are progressively banning much of that content/pages these days. The other small issue is that mostly they leave out that they are buying the traffic to their products so might be making $10,000 a month in revenue but paying almost all of that back out again to JointVenture, Sub-Affiliates and Ad Networks.
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ David, It's true. Sometimes the money they spent is even more than the money they earn, they tell people that they make $10,000 a month, but they never tell people they spend $20,000 a month for advertising.
  29. Bjorn says:
To me point one and two looks the same. And I agree with you, the moneymaking niche is overcrowded. Its a catc22 for a new blog also, as you point out people demands to see your income to trust you... Bur in many cases new bloggers can come up with more interesting stuff than the successful bloggers because the new bloggers have to defend their existence on every post...
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ Bjorn, Absolutely, sometimes new bloggers can come up with more interesting stuff, but one thing is that they should be having some experience in relevant field. People won't trust you even you have some interesting stuff because you don't have solid proof that shows your statement is workable.
  30. Fitz says:
Spot on reasons and what I think is the most common mistake of people who wants to earn from blogging. It's always better to blog about your passion because you're right, money will eventually follow. Same goes for people in affiliate marketing who promote products that will "help" you make money online.
    • Lee Ka Hoong says:
@ Fitz, Yes, just blog about your passion and do the best you can, money will definitely follow in some days. The most important thing is...never give up!
