What the Pantene Ad Can Teach Us About Blogging

October 5, 2010 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Michael

Best Selling Headlines

I recall reading that an ad is on average seen up to twenty times before the buyer responds to or recalls the information.  Up to twenty times before a person takes action and buys.

Your blog is an ad. On average the number of times your blog is seen, read or  spoken about before the reader takes action and ‘buys’ is  in many cases much higher than twenty times. For a beginner the number is almost incalculable. It is important to remember, therefore, that building a well read blog with high traffic and a healthy subscriber list takes time.

As the Pentene ad says: “It won’t happen over night, but it will happen.”

Catchy phrase, isn’t it? And a very successful one with a clear message: Persist, have patience and the results will come. But they won’t happen by themselves. We have to make them happen. Here are a few ways we can do that:

Write ‘best selling’ headlines:

Never underestimate the importance of headlines. According to many of the best copy writers you should spend half the time on writing the headline as you do on writing your posts. Writing headlines that sell takes time and practice. Brian Clark agrees that:

8 out of 10 people will read headline copy, but only 2 out of 10 will read the rest. This is the secret to the power of the headline, and why it so highly determines the effectiveness of the entire piece. The better the headline, the better your odds of beating the averages and getting what you’ve written read by a larger percentage of people (Writing Headlines That Get Results).

Improve your writing.

We all know content is king. But it’s pointless having great content if your writing has incorrect spelling, grammar and punctuation. Many first time readers will bounce off your site faster than a rubber ball off a brick wall if it is littered with spelling and grammatical errors. You also run the risk of having your regular readers unsubscribe and stop visiting your blog as well. Many writing and grammar resources are available online and offline so there is no reason why you can’t make improvements. Here are some sites I use and recommend:

Build a community then build a community within a community.

The best ways to build a community is to listen to and appreciate your readers. Listen to what they have to say and let them know you value the time and effort they have taken to read and comment on your posts. Get to know your readers on a personal level. Send them a personlized email, interact with them on social media sites, and find a common interest. As Chris Garrett said in a recent interview “Lavish attention on [your readers], they’ll tell people how awesome you are, and your community grows.”

Blog commenting/Guest posting:

A ‘gazillion’ articles have been written on these two topics but you’ll be amazed how many new bloggers who aren’t doing this, so it’s worth reiterating here: blog commenting and guest posting are two of the most effective ways to drive traffic to your blog, gain credibility and authority, engage with new readers and top up your subscriber list. Get it. Good. Now go and do it.

How are you making things happen?

I recently started up a business and the quote above is a real motivator. In regards to headlines...I have found using amazon great for title inspiration. Look for the best selling books in your niche and then study the titles. You will soon notice a pattern. Also a lot of blog post titles will say "The top 7 best new inventions" or equivalent niche. These titles always draw me in because, like many people on the web, I don't want to spend ages reading. "Best new inventions" suggests that you will face an epic post which is 50 pages long.

Thanks for the links to sites to help improve writings. I have a major problem in this department since English is not my mother tongue and I never took any formal classes to learn to write, read or even speak for that matter. From experience I can say the best ways to improve is keep writing and reading more. I can say with certainty, since I started my first blog last year I have come a long way. I had to go back to all of my old posts and fix major errors that I am embarrassed to even mention. And the funny thing is I still have to do it once in a while since I learn new things about English grammar, punctuation and writing in general.

From the point you have listed above, i have to work on my "writing skill". Indeed by reading many blogs, i have slowly started to improve it.
    • Michael says:
Hi Kimi The resources listed will definitely help, too. Thanks for reading and commenting. Michael
  7. Patricia says:
Wow I had to check and see where I was Michael. You are certainly grasping it all and you nailed it with this post. I agree with the points you made and the only one I have difficulty with is the guest posting. Not what you have written; the opportunities to participate. I am in such a small niche; the opportunities to guest post are limited. However, on saying that I have been asked to but have only agreed to one as the other two were just submitting articles. They had no comments or interaction on their sites and I want to build community and interact with my readers. Really enjoy your writing and this is no exception. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Michael says:
Hi Patricia I see what you mean. Guest posting in your niche looks like a challenge because of its size. I'm stoked you found the points valid and useful Patricia. Thanks for coming by and commenting. Talk soon Michael

  9. TJ McDowell says:
I'm reading a book right now called Guerilla marketing, and it talks about the process in the buyer's mind where they go from not being interested in a product to purchasing the product after repeatedly seeing the product advertised. It even has a hypothetical step by step thought process of what the potential buyer may be thinking each time they see the ad.
    • Michael says:
Hi TJ I've read something similar. What's the name of the book you're reading? It sounds interesting. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Michael
      • TJ McDowell says:
The book is Guerrilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson. I think you'd like it.

I still trying to find out the relation between pantene and this post. Though headline is somewhere related but rest point which you have mentioned is not like pantene ads. You also not compare important factors involved in pantene ads and our learning. May be I was expecting more as this post is on famousblogger.
    • Michael says:
Sorry to have disappointed you man. I'll try harder next time :)
  11. Pritam says:
You are right Mr. Micheal. Its the headline where most of the people read before they think to read the whole content. If you can sell this, then you are on top. Thanks for providing resources on writing skills. Its useful.
    • Michael says:
Hi Pritam Thanks dude. I'm glad you found this post useful and the links helpful. Talk soon Michael
  12. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Michael, So true, so true. I always say the Title is the most important thing on a page. If you not can grab the reader there, do they not read the rest. I work very hard with the titles, both for the reader and also for the SEO. Good article.
    • Michael says:
Lennart we have a lot in common bro. Headlines are just as important as the content; get both right and you're on your way up. Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Keep rockin' Michael
  13. Dan Lew says:

Michael, All great and important points to really improve your blog and increase traffic and throughput greatly. Headlines and content will get (and hopefully keep) them interested and networking and working on solid connections will likely keep fresh faces coming to the circle to see your nifty headlines and superawesome content
    • Michael says:
Hey Steve Spot on bro. The headline should be as good as the content. Like you say of we can get the two right we'll increase our visits, turn readers into 'buyers' and massively improve our circle of influence. Thanks for the super awesome comment. Michael

      • Jeevan Jacob John says:
Welcome and Thanks for replying so fast ! Many bloggers who abandon their blogs also have the knowledge of these things but they lack one thing, one important piece : Patience. They want it fast. They want their subscriber count to grow like crazy in the first month. Of course this would not happen unless you have a history of creating wonderful, informative site. The best example here would be yourself. There are a lot of struggles during the first week of blogging. But you have managed to defeat those struggles and move forward. Patience is the Key ! Anyway, Great Talking with you !
        • Michael says:
Patience is the key, Jeevan. Ditto persistence. And you're right, my first week blogging was a massive struggle. Actually my first month was. But I feel I'm slowly gaining momentum through patience and persistence...and hard work. Thanks again for the wonderful feedback. Talk soon Michael
  19. Trevor B. Reed says:
So true that it doesn't happen overnight but it will happen. I think the last tip is to not give up. Some days you might not feel like writing and that is ok. Use the days when you are really feeling the juices as an opportunity to make up for those bad days. Look for ways to make small incremental improvements everyday, and over time they will add up to great things! Great post Michael, really enjoyed your style.
