There ain’t no Magic Pill in Internet Marketing

March 28, 2012 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Alden Tan

Internet Marketing

So when you hear about internet marketing, you immediately think that it’s an easy way to make money. After all, it’s online right? That’s definitely easier than making money the traditional way, that is working for a fixed salary or starting your own bricks-and-mortar business.

Furthermore, there seems to be a lot of self-proclaimed gurus who are all too willing to tell you how bloody easy it is to make a full-time income online, or rather, make that a comfortable living online where you are financially free and you get to live the life you dream of.

Well guess what, that isn’t true at all. Not a single bit. It may be all online, but there is simply no magic pill to making money online.

The magic pill, peeled apart

When gurus advertise how “easy” it is to make money online, keep in mind that they are trying to sell you something. They are trying to sell you their methodology in making money. It may have worked for them, but not necessarily for you. As such, they will hype everything up and make it sound as if it’s extremely easy. What more, some of them are there to lie to you!

Let me break it down for you in simple examples:

A guru may say: Make it easy for yourself, outsource your work online at cheap prices!

The truth: Outsourcing takes thorough testing for good work to be done. You may rake up a high cost in paying for workers.

A guru may say: Simply gather as much traffic as possible to your website through some cheap and effective methods.

The truth: The methods may be cheap, but they are crap traffic. You can’t monetize them at all and you don’t even know they are from bots.

A guru may say: I can throw in bonus products for you at no cost.

The truth: They aren’t bonuses. They are just variations of the same products.

There is no shortcut to success

There isn’t. Success doesn’t come easy. It goes along with the fact that nothing in life comes easy and that for whatever you want in life, you have got to work hard for it.

Life isn’t meant to be easy, not that I want to come across as very cynical, but that’s how it is. If you want to reap the fruits of your labour, you have got to bust your ass and starting working hard!

It is REAL experience and work that will give you the answers in the end. Even if you fail at what you start, that is okay. It is failure that gives you the real lessons you require for ultimate success! Hardship may feel like a real downer, but that’s how successful people make it in the end.

Forget about the magic pills. They may be easy to swallow, but they give you a bad taste after that.

There are so many people out that actually think there is something that will give them instant success. Some people just don't want to WORK HARD and earn their money the way everyone had to...in time. I always believe that anyone telling me that something is too easy, is someone I need to run the hell away from and fast. The bad part is that they give the honest ones that did make it a bad name. Its like dieting, when people have surgery to lose weight real fast when they should have just worked it off in the gym the right way. Some people just don't want to wait and they are the first to fail. Great post Alden.

Thank you so much, Alden, for writing this! There are far too many people out there who think that working online is some kind of "magic solution" for all of their woes - when, in reality, it's just as much work as the offline world! Hopefully, this post will help at least one person from falling victim to some guru's claims that they can be rich by next Tuesday and living on their own private island while their business works on "autopilot"! :)

Info-products may be tempting but after all, there will not be any clear way or strategy to achieve it or there will be misleading points..Success comes after hard work and devotion on the project.

For real man! There's no magic pill because value adding doesn't come from magic, automation or passive whatever!

Good to see you keeping up the guest posts Alden. You're right that there is no magic pill in internet marketing. As others have mentioned, it really was a lot easier to make money online the further back in time you go. Search engine algorithms used to be a lot less complex and could easily be exploited. Back then some of those magic pills actually worked. Unfortunately they kept on promoting those strategies long after they stopped working. It became more about selling the idea rather than selling a useful service or product. These days making money online is a lot of hardwork. There are some shortcuts to make it easier, but still you cannot expect to profit without investing time and money.
    • Alden Tan says:
True. I wouldn't know about last time. So they actually worked? I think most of us always wish for a kind of magic pill, especially in internet marketing. But at the end of the day, it requires hard work and effort from within. In that sense, the magic pill is in us, but it'd take a while for us to realize that and fully utilize our true potential.
  8. Calin says:
There might have been some moments when there were things like a magic pill - several years ago when you could "cheat" Google in various ways, but things are getting tougher and tougher by the day and all these fake gurus will soon become obsolete. Instead, hard work, determination and quality content will replace the "magic pill" and only then the true bloggers will have success.
  9. Andy says:
Internet marketing is definitely no shortcut to living a good life. It's hard work, as every other job, but once you've reached a certain level, it's much easier to say go on vacation, or work from a remote place, than if you'd have a 9-5 job...so I rather put my energy in this "job" than something else ;)
    • Alden Tan says:
For real! Me too! It's still a tough journey for me, but I ain't giving up. The rewards alone are just too enticing not to care!
  10. Steve says:
You are totally right. There is no "easy" way or magic pill to success. In the end it is going to take time and effort (or spending that money for outsourcers) Personally I do use some outsourcing. (maybe about 30% of my online efforts) But as you pointed out, I do this on things I KNOW how to do, I know exactly what they are "worth" in terms of time saved and importance and it is just a "slice" of my efforts. One way or another there is a lot of sweat equity that has to be put in. Even more so when you are brand new and you have to learn a lot and have not streamlined a "system" that works for you. This is exactly why so many people start and fail..they do not realize there is so much work involved for "instant success"
    • Alden Tan says:
I know right. I was rather taken aback myself when I realized there was so much hard work involved. All the gurus, short cuts, guides and stuff in the world can't apply to you 100%. They may work for for the person who wrote the guide, but not you. At the end of the day, you got to work hard and actually USE FAILURE and LEARN from it to develop your own kind of system. Then success will come.
  11. spark says:
i liked it. There is no shortcut to success. ground work is most important thing to start a business and if you wanna succeed in your business you have to work hard. "Arise! Awake! and stop not till the goal is reached" by swami vivekananda. i agree with the author. thanks for the great post.
    • Alden Tan says:
Thanks for the comment Spark! People want short cuts and the easy way out all the time. That's why internet marketing seems so enticing to them, what with all the success stories and proven people enjoying life! But success stories aren't showing the more important thing: the hard work and failures behind the scenes.
  12. Sharyn Sheldon says:
I love hearing the naked truth! The reality is that starting an internet marketing business has many of the same elements as any new venture. The failure rate is spectacularly high (90%?) and it takes a huge effort in the beginning. Many people fail simply because they haven't done enough market research and planning, which includes budgeting. You have to treat it as a business, not a quick get-rich solution to all your job problems. Oh, and another new guru saying you hear now is "this isn't for people looking for fast profits", but then they go into how easy everything is and how you just have to follow all the steps they lay out. Nothing is that easy. Pick the wrong niche and you won't go anywhere. - Sharyn
    • Alden Tan says:
Wow! 90%! Well truth be told, I didn't do ANY market research or planning. I took things step by step with my blog. You see, I'm a lousy marketer and I possess no foresight to do business. But I have passion. And I just believed in myself, took things step by step to get to where I am today. I also sprinkle in patience and a LOAD of believing in myself. Nice quote at the end Sharyn!
  13. Samuel says:
Internet Marketing is a study that takes some good time to master. I am still learning, but am very happy doing so. Right? People think that online, everything is easy, just like click a button on the screen. No! Success through success is based solely on hard work and believe. Excellent article.
    • Alden Tan says:
Thanks Samuel! Not just a click, but millions of clicks! I am learning too. All the best to you. Success will come to those who believe hard work and themselves.
  14. Anne says:
I guess this goes back to the very old saying: "Money does not grow on trees"... For many people, the Internet is still a mystery, so maybe that's why it's easier to market "get rich schemes" to them when it comes to online business.
    • Alden Tan says:
Here's a food for thought: There's a difference between a business model and a scheme. That's probably why people cannot find the "magic". They look for schemes, get-rich-quick ones at that. They have no model, plan or anything. That's why they fail.
  15. michel says:
