The Secret Sauce to Hubpages Marketing!

April 4, 2011 - Last Modified: April 4, 2011 by Wong Chendong

Hubpages Marketing

Have you ever been to a great looking website and thought “wow, this is exactly what I needed”? I know I have, and almost every time I either bookmark it or share on Facebook and Twitter.

But what about bad websites, what do you do then? Typically, if you’re like me, you probably hit the back button within seconds, recognizing that you’ve found a Made For AdSense (MfA) site, or that you aren’t going to find what you need.

So if we understand our own behavior, then explain to me why we don’t think about this behavior when creating Hubs on Hubpages?

The difference between a helpful, resourceful, and useful Hubpage and one that’s made to sell something is tremendous, and often times, if you survey Hubpages owners, you’ll find that the ones actually making money are not the ones that built a site in 5 minutes but that spent as much time building their Hub as they do their other websites.

It’s like this – Hubpages marketing is no different than any other form of online marketing, so don’t treat it that way. Instead, spend time building a Hubpage site that rocks. If you do, I think you’ll find that the reason Hubpages hasn’t been working for you isn’t that it doesn’t work, but that it doesn’t work for spammers.

The Ingredients of a Proper Hub

1. Clearly Segmented Content

Take a look at some of the top Hubs and you’ll notice that they don’t just copy and paste a 500 word article and call it a day. They break up their page into multiple sections, each with a different piece of information.

Think of a Hubpage like the front page of the New York Times. Hit people with the hard hitting headlines so they can choose which posts they’d like to read and then break it up so that they can easily browse the page.

It’s not that difficult to make content both compelling and easy to read. It’s the extra 10 minutes required to do it that separates the good marketers from the lazy marketers.

2. Cleverly Placed Links

Placing a bunch of links in a resources box or on a sidebar isn’t going to help you, and the chances are high that your audience won’t click them anyway.

Instead, bury the solutions inside of the content, and be sure to make them relevant solutions. That being said, don’t stuff links that aren’t relevant, don’t trick people, and don’t abuse the HubPages guidelines.

3. Provide Real Solutions

I get really tired of seeing Hubs that are nothing more than contrived content used to stuff affiliate and blog links into an article. These don’t help anyone, and if you aren’t helping, then you aren’t going to see results.

The reality is that you can’t provide the solution to every problem, and you shouldn’t try. What I’m trying to say is that you should include links to real resources that are just as useful to your reader as your own affiliate links might be. If you help them, they’ll likely backtrack to bookmark the Hub and eventually stumble onto your links.

hubpagesHubpage marketing isn’t difficult, but it takes time to do it well, which is why so many people do it wrong. Stop trying to skimp on content and solutions and think of yourself as a publisher, like a newspaper, rather than a late night infomercial. I promise you – this matters.

What do you think? Am I off my rocker, or do you agree? Let me know in the comments

I think you hit the real key in one of your comments... HubPages is a social network. I've found writing hubs is easier than posting to my website because I read and respond to other hubs, or to questions or forum posts. So when I write for HubPages, it's more personal, I'm usually writing to a specific person. It makes the writing easier. And it makes the quality a lot higher. Another point is to comment on other hubs and in HubPage foums. You get a lot of traffic initially to a hub from participating in the community. If you are marketing another website from the hub, or form your profile, that traffic counts too. (They say it's not good for adsense, but if that's not your reason for being on HubPages then why not get all the traffic you can?)
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well... if I could earn Adsense from Hubpages... of course it is great, but I never really thought of it, all I want is getting traffic from hubpages just like what you said, commenting and participating in community which is almost just like a social network.

Someone use Hubpages for creating Adsense account
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, you can earn adsense in hubpages... but of course if your traffic must be damn high...
  3. Bryan says:
Hi there, I think Hubpages has been affected by the recent Google Updates but there are some really excellent hubs on Hubpages. I've been on Hubpages long enough to see what separates junk content from the really good quality content. The funny thing about the good ones is that they write for the sake of writing and not for the sake of building backlinks although the group that falls into the latter category are less. But still there's a lot to contribute in their forums, answers and comments. You don't really need hundreds of hubs on Hubpages to make a good impression there.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, a hubber doesn't had to write 100 over hubs to get good impression, well... I had been using hub pages for about 2 years, and I had only written 22 hubs... although that's really little but quality is better then quantity...
  4. Shiva says:
Hi Wong, Nowadays I see a lot of people make hubs just to build backlink to their blog or just for making a linkwheel. I think those kind of strategy is not going to work if one does not put quality content in the hubs. None the less, you have pin pointed some great tips for hub pages, thanks for that. Regards, Shiva
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
No problem, and thanks for coming by reading my guest post and commenting, hope my post can spark people to use hub pages properly.
  5. Dennis Edell says:
An excellent tutorial Wong. I Haven't started hubbing yet, but I will do it right eventually with the help of this article.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Thanks and don't forget to add me as one of your hubbers....
      • Dennis Edell says:
I don't know what that means yet, but I'm sure I'll see eventually. lol
  6. Mani Viswanathan says:
I've stumbled across plenty of catchy hub page titles which had nothing useful in it. The point about writing something real is absolutely true.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, yes... there are hubpages that are useless but believe me there are some that is just as useful and great as the content you just read and commented here.
  7. Alex says:
Hello Wong, I am all in when it comes to providing great content to your readers and wanting them to find only great content when they read my articles, but if I don't add something that is related to my money website, like a link to a landing page, a link to one of my money page articles, I doubt it that people will come back to the article just to buy my stuff. Honestly, how many times have you done that? Yes, Hubpages need more attention then your usually article directory or 2.0 and it can help you if you help the readers by providing content which they find useful, but avoiding to place your money links in your articles it's a waste.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Honestly, I never put a landing page or a link to any affiliate site, for the reason, it is not the same as article directories and I do not recommend anyone to link to any affiliate site because if they want to link, it is still best to link to a landing page, because as you said you want the people who come to stay in touch rather then come and go right? You doesn't had to have an affiliate link because if you can get enough traffic to just a few hub... believe me... the Adsense is enough for your earning.
  8. Sathish says:
Hubpage marketing is entirely new to me. I am yet to write hubs but I have a plan of creating hubs to build backlinks for my businesses. Hope your tips will help me to achieve that. Sathish
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, I believe they will, just remember always take Hubpages just like you take as Facebook and you will really see a big different in using it. Never take it as an article submit site... Hubpages is a social networking site...
  9. Vijayraj Reddy says:
i tried Hubpages, but no traffic to my hubs.. i think i have to add good title with keyworkd in it and add more quality content to get lot of traffic to my hubs...
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
First of all title and keywords are important, but if you really want traffic fast, of course content quality is the number one element, but I suggest you to start finding and communicating with those people in Hubpages and adding them to your profile just like Facebook. Just remember Hubpages is not the same as article directories, take hubpages just like you take Facebook and you will see the traffic increase...
  10. semmy says:
To be hones I never used hubpage Wong, but I agree with you, we must delivered a good content. Thanks for your article!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, you should for the reason, you will get to know more online friends of the same niche you are in, I mean getting to know different people from different platform, will be beneficial to you when you are going to launch a product or something and it's going to go viral in different platform...
  11. James Pruiit says:
I agree. the one thing that I would add to that is don't post and run. Hubpages is like any other social site. engage the community and they will visit your hubs and if they are well made, they will visit your site as well.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
There are a lot of hubpage when you read the content , you will realize it's a hit and run article, and the worst is their profile doesn't had a picture and also an intro... this is not going to work as you had said, it's a community and with a proper profile... how can we really know each other, right?
  12. Kyle says:
It always surprises me that content builders need to be reminded of basic web design concepts when it comes to a different platform other than their CMS of choice. Obviously, we don't all have unlimited amounts of time to build perfect hubpage articles, but I think your third paragraph hits the nail on the head. When you're developing content for an article site you should provide as much thought and value as you would with your own website. A great reminder article!
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Yes, having value in a content is just as important as selling a product that will benefit a customer, if it doesn't benefit at the end of it, it will be the first and also the last you will see the customer or reader...
  13. Jitendra Singh says:
Cool pages marketing tips, thanks. I really like the idea of placing relevant links inside the content rather putting them on side bar or else.
    • Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger says:
Well, putting relevant links inside actually do increase the the links coming into the hub page which actually rank the hub page better in terms of search in hub pages...
      • Jitendra Singh says:
Yes, thats what my mean. Thanks again :)
