Consumerism Stats: How Much Do We Spend? [Infographic]

June 29, 2011 - Last Modified: April 1, 2014 by Tony Shin 7,633

Consumerism Stats Infographic

Many of us, myself included, spend money unnecessarily. I can recall countless times where I’ve thrown things away, whether food or material possessions and think “Man. How much was this again? Oh yea, that’s right. DANG IT!”

Visualoop has created this infographic about consumerism and illustrated some stats about how much we spend and how much we throw away. It is a bit sad, considering I always beat myself in the head for wasting money. This infographic especially stood out because it really does give us a different view on an aspect of our lives we pay attention to, but not as much as we should.

Visit Visualoop for up and coming graphics everyday. The site owner, Tiago Veloso, is approaching the stages in which he will be playing a huge role in the way we receive information and the future of an ‘all-you-can-see’ infographic platform. So stay tuned!

I always thought that plastics were the first ones to be on the list of the world's garbage. I never thought it would be wood. Oh well, that's proof enough that trees won't really last for our future future generations. Children of today and tomorrow may enjoy awesome technology and its advancements, but I wouldn't trade it for the experience of knowing nature - getting to see and touch real trees and plants - not just seeing it in front of a widescreen TV. This is a very informative infographic. Thanks for sharing!

These are interesting stats and facts in that image :) I really liked one about public transport - public transport saves 95% carbon moxide. That's interesting. By the way, do you personally use public transport? I try to ride bicycle if I can :) Matt Poc

Really these are main things where our most money spend but we can control it....... but we never thought about it.

Whoa. That's an eyeopener. Just like when I clean out my fridge before the next weekly grocery store trip (that can be a nose opener, too....ewww). I read a few years ago that Americans are notorious for their needless spending. I think we all kind of know that but when you see statistics, it can be breathtaking.

When I think about all the money that I have wasted and could have saved I feel like slapping myself. Not mention the fact that there are people struggling around the world who could live for months off the money we have all blown. Good post!
