Blogging Mythologies That You Should Ignore

January 24, 2012 - Last Modified: March 29, 2014 by Noah Mark

Blogging Mythologies

Blogging is the ultimate tool to build your own online business. Like websites, a blog can be similarly monetized with various advertising platforms to give you a wide range of earning opportunities.

If you don’t know the tricks on how to make money with a blog, then you only have to read some blogging tips articles which can be found in forums, article sites and blogs itself.

Blogosphere is not just about building blogs and making money, it’s all about building relationships with co-bloggers and creating a community which aims to share thoughts, points of view and other information that could be useful to others. These “thoughts” however can be confusing to most novices who wishes to learn every aspect of this endeavor.

Sure we have our own points of view when it comes to online business and some of these opinions even become the universal guidelines that people now follow. Let me give you some of these “people’s perspectives” and why I identified them as mere mythologies that you as a novice, should highly ignore.

Bloggers are Great Writers

It is true that most famous blog owners are exemplary writers, which you as a beginner should try to imitate as much as possible. But this doesn’t mean that you have to push yourself to the limit just to become a great writer yourself.

If your first language is not English, you only need to get your point across to your readers. After all, we are not perfect and are born to make mistakes. In short, all of us can build a blog and write anything and any way we want as long as it is informational, readable and useful. Being a good writer is all it takes and besides, practice makes perfect right?

Content is King

This is probably the most popular myth in the blogging world. You can extensively see this phrase all over the Internet. I myself consider content as the backbone of a blog, but it is not the only thing that you should focus on in your online business endeavor. Marketing is the other aspect of blogging that you should learn thoroughly.

With content and marketing combined, you are guaranteed to have a successful blogging career.

WordPress is a Lot Better than Blogger

WordPress vs Blogger – a battle of platforms! I bet you have already seen this type of topic in various forum posts and blog articles, which compares these two giant blogging platforms. And I am so sure that most of the time, Blogger ends up on the short end of the stick. Why? Because WordPress is indeed the more flexible platform.

But, you can’t erase the fact that Blogger has its own advantages like its usability and its 100% free. If you want to make money in blogging, both Blogger and WordPress can give you similar benefits which are entirely based on user preferences.

Traffic is the most Important Thing in Blogging

Traffic can be acquired through different channels and mediums. Heck, it can also be acquired through marketing off-line. It is true that constant marketing of your blog means traffic, traffic and traffic.

But traffic is just an initial step in blogging and in order to be successful, you need to attract loyal readers that will forever patronize your article posts or whatever you offer on your blog. You need to turn these visitors into subscribers and into paying customers.

How can you make your visitors become loyal readers or at least retain them for another visit? You can achieve this by building your subscribers list, email list, social media following, building a community with other blogs and many others. In summary, traffic can only be important if you can convert your traffic into sales or online income.

All of these myths are all over the Internet. While in general these myths are true in nature, you have to expand your knowledge more with regards to these myths. Once you learned and applied these techniques to your blog, only then you can say that you are an expert blogger!

If I missed anything important with regards to this topic that you wish to share with us, please don’t hesitate to leave your valued opinion below at the comment section.

I always say that Readers are the King. I am just the Serf (or was that Court Jester?) delivering them content. And you could have Pulitzer prize winning content on your site. But if you don't have proper SEO and a way to Market/Share what you've written - it will never get read. And sure you want a ton of traffic - return traffic. Either through your newsletter, RSS Feed, Social Media following, plus any type of products you might have to offer. If you don't have them for steady RETURN traffic and rely on just what Google tosses your way? Your going to run out of visitors eventually.
  2. Samuel says:
Ohh yea :) Especially with the part of content is king. If there is no one looking at it, how can you say this. It goes against this fact completely. Many things in this article need the people who continue to spread this, to fix that.
  3. Dennis says:
Noah I couldn't agree with you more about wordpress vs blogger. i actually have a blogger blog and the one feature that absolutely astonished me was being able to change the width of the sidebar.. That was mind boggling. I know in Wordpress, you either have to find that perfect theme or know some CSS coding to change the width. Great article my man. I agree with you on that content is king too but to an extent.. I have made blogs in the past and created tons of content but didn't focus on traffic.. NO MONEY.. LOL.. That's the one equation that works every time. No traffic=no money
  4. Morgan Barnhart says:
Hm, I'm not sure if these are exactly 'myths' as much as they are just blown out of proportion or are debates that are often held in the internet marketing world. Some people may have found complete success by using Wordpress over blogger and vise versa. And it's pretty hard to deny that traffic is the key to success; if no one sees your work, your social network won't grow, your email list won't grow, your daily numbers won't grow; without traffic you don't really get anywhere and you don't make any money. Yes, everything works together in order to create a loyal readership, but I don't necessarily think these are myths, I think they're just blown out of proportion. :) Thanks for your thoughts!
  5. Devesh says:
Hey you are totally right some of the points that you have stated are like real myths. You ask someone and they will state it as if its the gospel truth. Thanks for the article.
  6. Deep says:
Hey some points that you have sated is like real myths of the blogging world but some are not really myths like content is king that's true to quite an extent.
  7. Pierro says:
I love blogger simply because it is easy and free. Wordpress must be self-hosted to enjoy its advantages and that calls for money and technical skills. You need to run a web hosting together with wp admin control panel which in fact newbies won't find easy at all. I was only worried about blogger's comment system, but now thanks to 'intense debate', for making blogger comment system one of the most attractive comment syst. ever! one more advantage for using blogger is that there is no too much seo to do in oder to rank high. Google index blogger content within 24 hrs. long live blogging, long live blogger!
  8. Abhi Balani says:
I'm on blogger and I'm happy with that. I earned my first $100 on internet without any investment. But yes, sometimes I feel bad comparing my blog's SEO with some tiny wordpress blogs out there with very less content comparing to mine.
    • Noah says:
Hello Abhi, You shouldn't feel that way about your blog. There is nothing wrong with blogger. I suggest that you keep on marketing your blog through various means such as guest blogging. Content is not the measurement of SEO success, its the effort that counts! Thanks for your comment.
      • Abhi Balani says:
Thank you, Noah! I really love blogger and my blog. And guest posting, yes! I've started. Even my first guest post is in my very first blogging contest (linking it below). I'd be grateful if you visit and share your thoughts by commenting there. And of course, share it if you like it.
        • Noah says:
I already leaved a comment. That was a very nice guest post abhi. I already +1 the page and shared it on my Facebook profile. By the way, you have a very nice Blogger blog. Your design makes your blog's platform impossible to identify (well I have to get your IP to distinguish if its from Blogger). You really did a good job about the hacks (I am a computer science graduate). Nice job. Although your site is just PR1, I think you will be successful. Keep up the good work Abhi.
          • Abhi Balani says:
Oh, Noah, I cannot explain you, how much worthy your words are for me. I mean this type of appreciation is really worthy. Actually, I got domain just before PR update, waiting for next PR update. You are most welcome on my blog, to visit, to comment, or to post. Thanks a lot. :-)
      • Abhi Balani says:
Thank you, Noah! Thanks a lot for your valuable comments. Hope you shared, too. :-)
    • Noah says:
Hey Abhi, Thanks for your comment. I mentioned you on my recent blog post. You can read it here -> http://www.bestonlinebusinessguide.net/apps/blog/show/12043344-you-are-so-wrong-about-blogger- Thanks, Noah
      • Abhi Balani says:
Oh Noah, I'm really honored. Feeling good for my blog. Thanks a lot for mentioning me there. :-) I'm proud of my blog.
  9. Jane says:
There are many myths in the blogging world. One has to write consistently by offering valuable content. You point is correct that by associating with other bloggers, one can enhance his potential. The correction or remedial measures will be automatic transforming your blogging success.
  10. Mohsin Mallik says:
I always prefer blogger as a blogging platform. As you rightly said, blogger have also got it's own uniqueness and advantages. We can use adsense in free blogger blogs but as far as I know, we can't place adsense in free wordpress blogs. Please let me know if you know how can I place adsense in free wordpress blogs.
    • Noah says:
Hey Mohsin, I think you can now use Adsense on WordPress.com but I am not sure about this though. Why use free WordPress if you can use other alternatives such as Blogger. Thanks for your comment.
    • Abhi Balani says:
That's right, Mohsin! Many bloggers are earning money by Google adsense with blogspot. I'm on blogger to, and love it.
  11. Jamie Northrup says:
The truth is like any business, all aspects are important. You can have the best food, but if you have no clients to eat it, you will fail. You can have the best marketing and tons of clients, but if the food sucks you will lose them. You need to balance both content (food) and marketing. Great post Noah :)
  12. Nishadha says:
I think all the above mentioned factors are important and true. If taken separately they may look worthless but a combination of all the things mentioned above is what really help a blog take off.
  13. Stan says:
I always laugh at "content is king", maybe because i see it everywhere. And lately content doesn't help if that's the only thing you have. You'll end up in the 10th page sleeping well at night because you have great content, but that's all.
  14. Raj says:
Hi Noah, Well made points. In every aspect of life, there are bound to be myths and beliefs. Its essentially about what works for people. For some, one thing words and they believe it to be sacrosanct. I believe, 'everything works; nothing works'. Nothing depends on one aspect. So you're bang on right...
  15. Lea says:
I always thought Content was king but ... true if no one sees it ... content is just ... an ignored poor peasant. Good reading , learned quite a few things. Oh well i guess i better get started on SEO.
  16. AstroGremlin says:
Content is prince? Noah, without some marketing and SEO all the great content in the world won't get readers to beat a path to your door. Writing ability? I certainly enjoy well written material, but there is only a threshold requirement -- writing doesn't have to be berfect. Love that cartoon graphic!
    • Noah says:
doink! Are you serious with your spelling right there or it is just me? LOL! I suggest that you better read the article again. Thanks for your comments through...
  17. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Noah, Good stuff. The excellent writer bit makes me laugh. Many successful bloggers are not really adept at writing but they can influence people to read their work and are master networkers. You can write pretty well but if you know how to sell your stuff, you become a dang good blogger. MLM pro Ray Higdon notes he received a message recently how poor a writer he is. Ray laughed it off. He gets millions upon millions of views each month. He is a successful blogger, and because the individual feels he does not know the nicieties of grammar he doesn't come off as a top shelf writer. All good bloggers know how to sell, network, and influence people through word use. Has little to do with being an earth-shattering author, and more to do with creating something that is helpful and arrives in an interesting package. As for wordpress versus blogger, I run a cash gifting blog on both platforms. My Wordpress is simple and clean, my blogger even more simple. My blogger blog has reached the first page of google for the "cash gifting" keyword, which gets over 30,000 hits per month. This is a "lowly", blogger blog ;) The usefulness of the content you share, the SEO you use and the little extra ad copy kick you give each post matters most. Whether it's on Wordpress or Blogger, doesn't matter as much. People can argue but if I've reached the first page of the Big G for a hyper-competitive keyword with my blogger blog, and I write similar content on my WP blog, it's tough for me think that blogger is less than optimal. Traffic = Good.Develop a crazed, loyal following = Even Better. Word of mouth advertising carries a power which can not be duplicated in the offline or online worlds. Thanks for sharing your insight Noah. Ryan
    • Noah says:
Hey Ryan, I agree with your thoughts! Writers who can influence others through the proper use of words instead of focusing perfecting your grammar, are much more important. If you can't make a single follower on your work, then you have a serious problem on how you communicate within your community. As for blogger, I also manage a successful Blogger blog which is in the "health" niche. Both Blogger and WordPress can give similar benefits to anyone. The only problem would be your work rate. If you don't exert any effort in a Blogger blog, you obviously won't reach anything. Simple as that. Thank you for your contributions Ryan. This will certainly help others about these blogging mythologies.
  18. Brittany Rubinstein says:
I can't stand the phrase "Content is King." Content is important for sure, but there are so many equally important factors including appearance and promotion tactics. Really great points!
  19. Noah says:
Thanks for your comments. Content is obviously the most important part of a blog. But the problem about content being the "king" is that bloggers always tends to write for the search engines, and not for their readers. This is the reason why they don't succeed. Blogs are initially designed as an online diary. If you are following non-commercialized blogs, you will see what I mean. Thanks.....
  20. Mitz Pantic says:
Yay !!! I am so glad you didn't say content was king! I am so over people saying that! Great post Noah. Well worth the read. :)
  21. Shamelle says:
There is many a debate on whether Content is king or not! The answer usually depends on the job of whomever is answering the question. It seems PR people lean towards giving content the crown. Social media professionals give social the monarchy. And so on. For my entire career, I've focused on content in one way or another. Content's definition has expanded as the roles involved in creating it and publishing it have evolved. In fact, an entire discipline has emerged just to be more strategic about marketing with content.
