Blogging Lesson From a Good Bottle of Wine

November 22, 2010 - Last Modified: November 22, 2010 by Ana Hoffman

Blogging Lesson

Robert Goldstein is a food critic who wanted to separate divine wine taste from all that market hype on class and sophistication.

As it turns out, when wine lovers are asked to do a blind test, result shows that even if they would naturally go for an expensive bottle of wine, the $10 wine from America they’d normally ignore actually tastes better than a $150 Dom Pérignon.

So why people still going after that overpriced bottle?

Simple. Because society makes it look good, it must therefore taste good.

The same rules actually applies to blogging.

Take a look at a pro-blogger for instance. Beneath all that experience, great content, and connections to-die-for, there’s this one powerful thing that makes the difference – the public perception.

You see, it’s not enough that you’re good. You MUST be perceived to be good.

Of course, the disclaimer would always be that to be perceived as good, you must have high value to begin with.

The upward curve of every blogger happens when they’re starting to gather recognition.

Once that happens, your popularity can grow at an exponential rate. Not just an incredible amount of comments, but think of response posts like what people would normally do when a problogger inspires them with an idea. Or perhaps collaborations and more important contacts landing in your inbox.

How do you achieve this?

There is really no concrete formula or guide to show you the way, but here are some ideas to help you:

  • Surround yourself with an air of professionalism – just like how imported wines would always brand themselves as the sophisticated kind. There’s this one time a female blogger experimented with what kind of twitter profile picture would gather more followers (or response). At first, her twitter profile pic seems like normal girl in her 20’s. Then there was a time she changed it to a smart-looking girl wearing glasses. However anti-feminist that might sound, she concludes it actually worked (the smart, geeky pic) made more people listen.
  • Testimonials matter – the good wines are usually the ones your friends rave about. Unless you’re a food critic or a wine expert, you don’t just suddenly blurt a series of the best wines in the world. No. You rely on others. Go get yourself interviewed, if not, guest post. Do anything that’ll put you on a broader radar (like contests, sponsorships, joint ventures), pull those readers to your blog, and let them know you’ve got quality. Make people notice, make people talk.
  • You need a good packaging – so maybe that well made bottle with its fine vintage detail that sparks our attention, maybe it’s that oak box that has that refreshing earthy smell, or maybe it’s that waiter with the nice bow tie who comes to deliver that expensive wine. Good packaging helps, it reminds you always that there’s quality somewhere in there. So here’s the tip: have a good blog theme, a custom one if possible. Have a great logo. When you have products to sell, don’t settle for cheap graphics. Make your readers know you’re out to put your best foot forward. Trust me, it helps.

This might sound a bit distant, but actually learning and trying to understand human psychology can go a long way.

Our readers, or maybe more importantly, our first time viewers rely much on their ability to make judgment calls.

If you’re blog doesn’t spark interest, then that’s just too bad. It goes the other way around, you can always use these things to your advantage. Your blog might not necessarily be like as expensive as a Dom Pérignon bottle, but at least look like it. With good content, of course.

Love it or hate it? Comment to show me that you’re alive!

Reminds me of my newest favorite wines from the Malbec region of Argentina. We had two $6 bottles last night, but since the label said Malbec everyone thought the wine was amazing. Perception is reality sometimes, just human nature. People in the blogosphere really appreciate authenticity and something that touches them, not always so easy to do. Controversy is another good tool.

This is all too true, both from a business and a wine perspective. Though I hate going to to the fair, being with friends and wine tasting make it worth the crowds. 2 years ago, in a blind taste test, a boxed wine from Target won the award for the best wine (red or white) under $15.00. And it was damn good. Experienced wine connoisseurs picked a Target brand box wine over all the imports. I bet that pissed them off! Now to start thinking about business. Thanks for the thought provoking post!
    • Ana says:
Hello Tim, Thanks sharing your own experience on wine. That is really cheap for a good bottle of wine. Have a great day, Ana
  3. Lennart Heleander says:
Hi Ana, It’s so correct, it is possible to sell everything in a beautiful and luxurious packaging, I know from experience from my own clothing stores.
    • Ana says:
Hi Lennart, Thanks for agreeing with me. All the best to your online business. Regards, Ana
  4. Chris says:
Funny, one of my favorite bottles of wine to buy on a regular basis is only like 5 bucks at Wal-mart. I forget the name, but it's from Argentina and has a duck on the label. So true though. People don't know what they like. They only know what they're told to like. That's why when you're writing web copy you always have to have a clear call to action. You need to tell the reader what action to take and when to take it. It may seem cynical, but we're all sheep, right? Or most of us, anyway.
    • Ana says:
Hello Chris, Well I can't blame you if you see it that way which is quite true. Understanding how this system works can help us on how to brand ourselves. Have a great day, Ana
  5. Wasim Ismail says:
Thanks Nice points mentioned, you also need a strategy of how your would me promoting your product, hence using online/offline marketing (SEO, networking, offline promotions…etc)
    • Ana says:
Yes Wasim, Promoting is another essential aspect in this business. Carry on, Ana
  6. Allan Douglas says:
Interesting analogy, and some good food for thought. You are the third person this morning to point out that professional graphics make a professional image. Conspiracy? LOL Thanks, lots for a newbie to think about.
    • Ana says:
Hello Allan, Well.. maybe this is just a great topic that many wants to share :-) Thanks for stopping by, Ana
  7. Daniel Sharkov says:
Hey Ana, Amazing article! The introduction lines are an absolute true. Whether someone will take something for good or not, depends a lot on other people's opinions. I doubt that someone can disagree that these days everyone is dependant on the opinion of others. Doesn't matter if those will be your closest friends or business partners - you will most probably take their words into consideration before making a decision. It might even be on a subconscious level. Your tips are all solid as well. The way you make yourself look to others is in turn the way they'll look on you. If you say you are an expert - they will take you as one. That is of course until you "prove" your own words wrong. So it's better to be what you are, since an image that is far from the true will eventually collapse, causing a lot of trouble. Awesome! Keep up the great writing! :)
    • Ana says:
Hello Daniel, Very well said. Thanks for a great comment. Good point also especially with building an image that must be true and real. We need to prove that we are what we say we are. Have a great day, Ana
  8. Ligia says:
Hi Ana, I wanted to stay on the sidelines and be able to get by online, but it won't cut it. Posture and a unique packaging are very important for anyone to be successful whether online or offline. You can't make it hiding, you've got to stand out! Superb post! Thanks, Ligia Fleckenstein
    • Ana says:
Hello Ligia, You are so right. To be successful in packaging and branding yourself, you have to stand out and show yourself and what you are made of. Keep it up, Ana
  9. TJ McDowell says:
Another thing to consider is that expensive wines tend to hang out with other expensive wines. Ok, a bottle of wine doesn't make a choice about who it hangs out with, but I think you get my point that you want to be around and network with other successful people.
    • Ana says:
Hello Tj, Yes, good point. Nice illustration as well. Hanging out with the successful ones can also build us up. Regards, Ana
  10. Lisa says:
Ana: Wonderful guest post. Although I always expect wonderful from you! I couldn't agree more with you, especially in regards to packaging. Our brand is our lifeblood and we must work to constantly improve that image!
    • Ana says:
Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for the compliment. You're right our brand as our lifeblood, that's how important it is. Take care, Ana
  11. The Bad Blogger says:
well... guess what? Images does make a big different... Just look at some advertising products that uses a sexy women as their marketing tools... although the product doesn't have anything to do with the sexy women... still... it sells like hot cakes... for example... Coke and Pepsi or Milo... all this are drinks but their advertising consist sexy and beautiful ladies... Anyway... as you had said... not just image does make different, stuff like being with someone famous, is still one good method to leverage... for example those unknown bloggers that was in John Chow's Dot Com Pho Video.... they got creditability just by appearing and talking to John... and guess what.... it does make a big different...
    • Ana says:
Yes you are definitely right. Sometimes, it's hard to understand why we need to comply with a certain standard, but I guess we just need to accept the fact that this is what works so we also have to apply it for our own benefit. Have a great day, Ana
  12. Patricia says:
Hi Ana This is very on topic for me as I have just opened my Etsy store. I couldn't afford a graphic designer at the time but when I can I will be getting my graphics redone. Although I am getting good feedback about the store, I know what I want there and will be happy when it is done to my standard. I agree with Rick's comment. We know how powerful the media are and sadly people are easily influeced whether it is just perceived stardom or the real deal! Thanks for an interesting post Ana. Lots to take from it for my own site. Patricia Perth Australia
    • Ana says:
Hi Patricia, Wow that's good for you. I'm glad your store is doing great. I'm sure it will be better after you're done with designing it. Thanks for dropping by, Ana
  13. Dana says:
Yeah, we (as bloggers) surely need a good packaging to reach the ultimate success. The good packaging makes a good perceiving.
    • Ana says:
That's right Dana. Great packaging is essential for every blogging site. Take care, Ana
  14. Erika says:
It's one of the reason that guest posting & building up your reputation with your audience is just as (or even more) important than impersonal link building. Your readers need to trust you - guest posting on trusted sites gives you that immediate credibility because of the implied endorsement.
    • Ana says:
Well said. Thanks for the comment. Glad you came by, Ana
  15. Rick LaPoint says:
I may get a lot of heat for saying this, but most people just do what they're told. All the radio stations say this "nobody" is a Star, and play some stupid ditty over and over, and within a couple weeks they really ARE a Star. The news media tells the people the new politician is a god, and overnight they are worshiped by millions. Those are the Rules; I didn't just make this stuff up. Therefore, play the Rules as they are handed to you. Exploit the System for your own personal gain. You will have to re-invent yourself every year or so, but that's the price of staying on top. My wife says I'm the most cynical human being on the planet; but that's only because I have been around the block enough times to have seen it all, seen it repeated, and seen it repeatedly work. Or, you can simply drink your expensive wine and pretend it ain't so ;-) Rick
    • Murlu says:
That's the natural of it all Rick - you pound people enough with an idea that something is popular and eventually it becomes so. You have to put up those blinders to keep out the BS so you can stay focused on your own projects otherwise you go insane trying to figure out why something mediocre gets represented as "the next best thing".
      • Ana says:
Hello Rick, You have a point there but that's how it works and that's how people think. That's why we need to learn a little about psychology and it will greatly help us to understand how people think. By doing so, we will have an idea if a strategy will work or not. This system works in blogging so if we want to accomplish our goals and reach the top, we should play the game. Regards, Ana
      • Ana says:
Great explanation Murlu. If we want to be successful we need to utilize the system that works. All the best, Ana
  16. Ryan Biddulph says:
Hi Ana, A powerful analogy here. Perception creates reality. Some blogs offering mediocre content generate buzz because their packaging or networking is tight. Offer blogs offering top of the line content gets zero traffic. The problem? No networking, poor presentation. Many luxury cars have cheaper parts: Lexus has Toyota parts, etc, but the public views Lexus as a quality brand so people still line up to buy the car. Continue to provide usable content, network like heck and spend a few bucks to craft a professional presentation of your work. Allow perception to create reality. Thanks for sharing and have a powerful day! Ryan
    • Ana says:
Hi Ryan, Great illustration Ryan. Thanks for adding more input. You're absolutely right. All the best to you, Ana
  17. Mani Viswanathan says:
Branding is very important right from the start. Don't consider a blog to be too small to be branded. I like the way you brand your posts, with ur siggy :) Thats a pretty good & neat way to brand.
    • Ana says:
Hi Mani, Thanks for the compliment. Yes you're right, let us not take for granted to power of branding. Have a great day, Ana
  18. Lauren Ashley Miller says:
I love great metaphors (or is this simile?) in writing and my god, this was great! It mades perfect sense to me in every way. My parents are wine enthusiasts who buy the expensive stuff, and their love of wine rubbed off on me - yet I am perfectly happy with a delicious glass of $8/bottle Yellowtail or Barefoot. Back to the blogging - the professionalism/packaging aspect is something I will directly change on my site within the next few days. I designed it based on my tastes, but there don't need to be flowers in the background if I want clients to take me seiously :) Thanks for the intelligent, well written post and the great advice.
    • Ana says:
Hi Lauren, I'm glad you decided to make some changes. Change is good especially if it's for the best. I hope everything will turn out great. All the best to you, Ana
  19. Jayant from TheAdMatrix says:
Yes, its a great example of explain the blogging with that of high priced wine. I agree that people tend to go for costly one because they think it will taste better then those the cheaper. In blogging world, you need to brand yourself in many ways so people will consider your writing of high value and they always wanted to hear what you want to say. But this does not come in one night, you have to work hard to achieve that.
    • Ana says:
Hi Jayant, Thanks for agreeing with me. You're right, this will not happen overnight so you also have to be patient in waiting for the result, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Thanks for the comment, Ana
