5 Out-of-Date SEO Strategies

May 20, 2010 - Last Modified: May 20, 2010 by Clifton Hatfield 1,496

Five Out of Date SEO Strategies

A long time ago it was easy to achieve a great search engine results position (SERP) with questionable, if not scandalous, SEO tactics. However, over the last decade, search engines have become much smarter spawning algorithms such as Google’s PageRank system and many popular SEO practices have been marked useless.  But searching through SEO blogs and forums, you will find many of the outdated strategies are still being hailed as useful techniques.  I have put together a list of five SEO strategies that no longer work and offer their useful counterpart.

Meta Tag Optimizing

Meta tags used to reign supreme when it came to search engine optimization and held the key to great results with searches. That boat has sailed. The meta keywords tag was strongly believed to offering valuable information regarding topics and terms used throughout a site. However, malicious site owners abused this tag by flooding it with misleading terms irrelevant to their content.

Useful Counterpart

Google has official stated that they no longer pay any attention to the meta tags for keywords. If you wish to build your pages and posts to rank for more keywords,  use category and tagging systems to better label and organize your content.  Tagging your content is one of the most effective ways to enhance the overall “searchability” of your site. Carefully structuring your site using categories helps your visitors find exactly what they are looking for and search engines are the same way. You should be able to reach anywhere on your from within three clicks.

Keyword Stuffing

I just told you how the meta keywords tag has been hacked out of the picture in terms of SEO and suggested tagging as the optimum alternative for ranking using keywords. Keyword stuffing is second on the list of dead strategies. A site was ranked by how frequent keywords appeared in a  page’s content. Stuffing keywords into a post no longer works and can have a drastically negative effect on your overall ranking.

Useful Counterpart

Write your content the way it is meant to be read, by humans. Too many keywords used so closely together can seem unnatural and difficult to read or understand. Choose wisely where you use them by making sure your keywords are in prominent regions of your web page, like headers, titles, and descriptive text.  Be sure to order your header tags (h1 – h6) in the proper order with your keywords and phrases.

Link Exchanges

No need to run around deleting your outbound or inbound links. We are here to improve the web, not unbind it. Exchanging links has always been a great way to funnel traffic into your site from external relevant websites and like other SEO strategies, it has been spoiled by the bad apples.  Link exchanging schemes developed and tried to influence how search engines measured the value of site linking.

Useful Counterpart

If you are looking for a solution to build inbound links that point to your website or blog, try offering valuable content or testimonials in exchange for a link back to your site. This adds value to the external website when you give them a testimonial raving about their product or service. You can also offer to guest author on their blog by writing valuable relevant content that will interest their visitors. In return, you will be given a back link to your site.

Search Engine Submission

Have you submitted your site to Google to be crawled? I have. And I have since realized that it was a complete waste of my time. I am still amazed with how many people , including web developers and bloggers, still submit their websites and RSS feeds to search engines to be crawled. Stop it.

Useful Counterpart

Google’s ability to find, crawl, and index new websites is so advanced that the time you spend submitting your site could be used more effectively.  Work on placing your back links on social media platforms like Linkedin or Twitter. Twitter is crawled by search engines constantly; so a link to your new site will be discovered quickly. Also try out Ping.fm, which offers the ability to post a link to several social media site simultaneously.

Spamming Blog Comments

Google introduced nofollow link tags to stop search engine spiders from continuing through a link and is know to devalue links within blog comments. This prevents other site and blog owners from leaving irrelevant comments on a post as their main back link building strategy.

Useful Counterpart

Leverage your time with more beneficial content that holds strong value to readers. Well-written, engaging, thought provoking articles will  naturally attract quality inbound links from other blogs and new sources that search engines value far more than blog comments.

In summary

The tricks of the trade in search engine optimization  are constantly evolving while search engines try to index the web and we try to get indexed. Avoid using any of the SEO tactics above because not only could they harm your ranking but permanently penalize you for banned strategies. For WordPress bloggers, it’s best to stick with up-to-date SEO tactics on WordPress Blog Search Engine Optimization.

  1. Mark says:
I still think keyword stuffing has its place. Obviously, any blogger or article marketer want to write first and foremost for people, because, in the end, great and informative content will be the only thing that stays afloat. But, I feel that if you write an article for people and then go back and strategically place a few keywords just to get their density up over one percent, it will be very beneficial in terms of on page SEO. It has been working for me. Mark
  2. Jamie Fairbairn says:
Keyword stuffing is a pet hate of mine. I've had people ask me to write content for them with a 20% keyword density in a 250 word paragraph and of course said "no way". The argument I like to use is: "if you owned an offline store and someone walked in to buy something would you just repeat the same thing over and over again to them?" - not very likely and if you did, they would think you were strange and probably leave without making a purchase.
  3. Dan says:
Bloggers love content! In many cases you can get a one way backlink by writing an article for them. Great list, I still laugh when people ask me to steal their competitors meta tags!
    • Tom Lambert says:
was going to post this. Guest blogging is super powerful and underutilized.
  4. Jason says:
I do think that link exchange still works, it just has to be thematic/relevant and non-abusive. With regards to using keywords within content, it's safe to just mention the targeted keyword at the first part of the content, and keep the body's keyword density to at least 0.6% - 2%. However, there's no really limitations in using your keyword in the content, as long as it's necessary to be mentioned, then don't hesitate to include it. Just remember that you are writing for real people and not just for search crawlers.
  5. Karan says:
I think twitter provides links that are nofollow! So are you sure, its gonna help us get indexed and ranking.
    • Clifton Hatfield says:
Hey Karen. Great observation. :) The nofollow attribute can be confusing because obviously the term nofollow would make anyone assume that search engines are not going to follow this link to see where it goes. However this isn't true in all cases and if it was, then it would really defeat the effectiveness of creating a semantic web. So, to answer your question. Yes, Twitter links are nofollow but that doesn't mean that Google will not index the links. It means that it will not effect your site's PageRank or link juice. Only in my example I suggest that links on Twitter will help Google to discover you site, not necessarily increase its SERP. Thanks Karen for the question! :) Cheers
  6. Mayur says:
I totally disagree with your Search Engine Submission point. Are you saying that submitting XML sitemap for indexing in Google's Webmaster Central is a total waste of time? Come on, why would they have a webmaster central if it was a waste of time? Even yahoo, bing and other search engines lets user submit their feeds, sitemap and website to their search engines. I think it does help your website to get indexed fast since you are submitting the xml sitemap and feeds for indexing. That is what those tools are there for. It also helps in tracking your website position on their results page. I think i need more proper explanation on why you think it is a "waste of time" and useless....
    • Karan says:
Well, I had just launched a niche site and I must say that It got indexed and started ranking for the targeted keywords. Moreover, Webmaster tools were created a long time ago and algorithms have changed a lot.
    • Clifton Hatfield says:
Hey Mayur. There are more effective ways to utilize your time when it comes to SEO. Optimum off-site SEO is a more powerful strategy then relying on Google's Webmaster Tools. The main point I have to back up my reasoning is the semantic web. Letting Google discover your inbound links placed within context off-site will greatly increase your link juice. If you want to submit an XML sitemap, go ahead and if you are using a platform like WordPress that builds it out for you then it makes things much easier but if you must create it yourself, that can be daunting and time consuming. Thus spending that time working on off-site SEO will be better time spent. Thanks! I love the feedback. :) Clifton
  7. Fiona Bosticky says:
Great article Clifton. It explains very simply, without the scary jargon, the kind of things you shouldn't be doing, and the things you should.
    • Karan says:
      I second you Fiona.
    • Clifton Hatfield says:
      Thanks Fiona and Karan!
  8. John Paul says:
Stop Spamming Comments..haha AMEN People reply to much on commenting.. instead focus your time on great content and promoting it the right way. Great List..
  9. chandan says:
Yes all are true. As you mentioned above search engine submission is no longer valuable, but local business listing is very much helpful for SEO. Local business listing is one of my best offpage activity that I do for my clients.
  10. Anne says:
Yup, lots of dead SEO strategies out there and they do get mentioned again and again by newbies reading articles from 2005 (and then re-writing them...). I don't think link building is bad though. The idea is to create good content and not to spam. Spammy link building is bad. Real link building, for traffic too, is always a good idea.
  11. Udegbunam Chukwudi says:
LOL. I remember the first time I submitted a site to Google. I waited months and never saw that site get indexed. I ain't kidding. I abandoned the site anyway. I only discovered the backlinks way when i decided to give it another try while making plans on earning money online.
    • Julia says:
Lolz, yes everyone still ask to a newbie to Submit they new blog or site to Google in order to get indexed. Actually they do not need to submit, just let the Search Engine Robots find by itself and it will looks more natural. How? give the site a backlinks from a site that already indexed and done, sure it's simple. Isn't UdegBunam? @CLifton Hatfield Your article revision from Old SEO to New SEO is good and complete enough. And yes, your article reminds me to stop my few SEO campaign.
  12. CJ says:
You're so right man! Especially about spamming comments. What's funny is that most of the people out there new to making money online have absolutely no idea that them spamming comments isn't actually doing them any good most of the time. Haha. CJ
  13. chandan says:
Enjoy by reading the article and the comment. I have to say one thing regarding to your article. You said that link from twitter, linked in are valuable, but as far as I know they do not pass PR juice as they use nofollow tag. SO how it will help us on SEO? But I know that social bookmarking can help us for boost search engine ranking. Well I also agree with all the mentioned point. What your opinion on .gov and .edu link? Are they comparability more valuable link than other link? .-= NEW from chandan@work at home blog´s last blog ..Basic blogging tips for new blogger =-.
  14. benwaynet says:
I've had a few blogs over the last few years but never worked about seo or backlinks. But I didn't get much traffic either. I'm guessing my writing style or lack of style is a cause. I just started my blogs because I like to share what I think and other things I've found online. lately I've been trying to spend a little more time trying to drive and keep track to one of my sites. Free time to blog is short, so I focus on one of my blogs and find time after the kids are in bed. Thanks for this post to help me limit where to spend my time, I've started offering guest authors on my site and I have seen an increase in traffic. If your interested in giving a re-emerging blog a guest post, stop by. .-= NEW from benwaynet´s last blog ..Can You “Get Rich Quick” with Pay-Per-Click? =-.

Hey Clifton! Excellent post and on a topic that is well overdue. Didn't know about meta tags, but that would explain why Thesis 1.7 have left them out of the site options that was available for easy placement in Thesis 1.6 and previous versions. Keyword stuffing has definitely been dead for quite some time. I do try and focus on LSI when I'm really serious about ranking for a post. What are your thoughts on LSI? .-= NEW from George Fourie´s last blog ..Does Your MLM Company Walk Their Talk Like Gold Canyon? =-.
    • Clifton Hatfield says:
Thanks George! Thesis knows what is going on. :) I think LSI is the only way to keyword optimize a single page. In fact, I am writing a blog post about it as well. It's Google's real way of combating the keyword stuffing that I listed above. Therefore, writing naturally for writers to understand will achieve much higher indexing. Great question! .-= NEW from Clifton Hatfield´s last blog ..Wordpress Biography =-.

Awesome. Yes, and you generally don't really have to think LSI to write LSI, it kinda just happens. But it's always good to swap a few words around for extra benefits. 16. Dennis Edell says:
First and foremost, I agree with all points. That said, don't actually waste quality time on any, but, hey if for instance you're dead set on meta keywords and you have a spare minute after writing a post.....slip a few in there, what the hell, some smaller engines might pick them up. Same with link exchanges - if you come across a decently ranked site willing to give a link (there's the rub folks), go for it.....just don't spend much time looking for said site. The others are dead on. Not only a COMPLETE waste of time, but can get you in trouble; with the search engines, and your online reputation as a whole. .-= NEW from Dennis Edell @ Direct Sales Marketing´s last blog ..Aweber Affiliate Link Contest! – This Is It!! =-.
  17. Kimi says:

  18. Genite says:
No one says that this all above SEO techniques totally not working, they are existing but with lower preference. So, my suggestion is don't avoid Meta tag and link exchange optimization specially.
    • Clifton Hatfield says:
Hey Genite, actually Google has previously stated that they do not use the Keywords meta tag. Now I am not 100% sure on the other search engines but I know that if I optimize for Google, the rest of the engines will follow. If anyone wants to do simple link exchanges then they can continue to do so. But one way links are much more powerful. 19. Suresh Khanal says:
Search engines never had to rely upon blog authors. They were asking: 1. For which keyword do you wish to list your site? 2. What should I display the description below the link for your site? Google was asking, might be, because their algorithm was not that smart to analyze and decide the content. I think some of the sources folks are getting links from are outdated as well. For instance, just today I've read a few blog articles recommending getting links from forums, directories, etc.. 23. Huey says:
This is a great entry. Keyword stuffing was a silly method to begin with, yes you tank higher but the whole point of ranking higher is to bring in more traffic. But what good is your traffic when they are sick of your content because it appears unatural. You shouldnwrite for your readers not for the search engines. If you write on topic and naturally you'll have sentences that require your keywords. Blog commenting is still useful not every blog is nofollow. But the issue to be addressed is spamming a quality comment will attract visitors as well as a good inbound link. That is what many fail to realise. It's quite hilarious when thinking about a lot of bloggers that are really pulling their hair from their heads as they don't have a clue on how to actually rank. Ok. Maybe I'm too insensitive. I guess this tends to be the case with many internet marketers. The only real big thing that changes in how google ranked websites was the introduction of "wesbite speed". Other than that everyone online is still speculating how exactly Google keeps changing and adding and tweaking the serps ranking commands.

Great article. I agree that many of the SEO tactics from the past are no longer relevant to Google, and many of the other search engines. I still use keyword tags anyway. It may not help much, but it doesn't hurt you either. There are other search providers than Google, and some of them still give some credit to your tags, although not much. • Clifton Hatfield says:
Thanks James. I definitely still use the keywords and description meta tags but not for SEO reasons. You are right, it won't hurt but they are more effective in other areas. When someone bookmarks or shares your post on social media sites like Facebook or Digg, they pull excerpts of your post from the keywords and description meta tags. Thus, it is important to still have them, but they aren't going to improve your SEO directly. Nice! However, you forgot to mention CommentLuv, and KeywordLuv... they actually do go a long way :), you get to eat your care and have it when dropping comments. Also, I'll be honest, I still submit my RSS feed to Google on their webmaster tools and it's doing quite fine for me, so I ain't complaining. I think the main thing with submitting RSS feeds is they should be updated regularly, that way it automatically would download your feed every few hours or so. I agree about using keywords strategically. The way I do it, is I use them naturally through out the content of the site / article. I also follow this method when creating titles. I also agree with you about not over using the keywords. Once again keywords should be used naturally, if you constantly and purposely use the same keywords over and over again, this isn't natural. Not only is it not recommended for SEO, but it is also considered a bad idea when writing good content. .-= NEW from element321 @ evolutionary designs´s last blog ..6 Useful Wordpress Plugins for Businesses =-.

I got sick when someone submit a guest post that stuffed! I had to edit his/her post over and over to reduce the keywords stuffing ;)
